Default Brighter headlamp bulbs: do they melt the wiring loom?

I read somewhere that changing the bulbs for brighter ones melts the wiring loom. Is this the case? I am thinking about installing Osram Night Breakers (12v 55w):
http://www.powerbulbs.com/product/os...r-h4-two-bulbs

Discovered why the lights have been so appalling, my stalk switch is worn out meaning I had side lights and full beam only (no dipped). New one being fitted but it would be nice to get a bit more light too if it is not going to ruin anything.

Depends on the wattage.
If there higher than standard it will melt the switch and the loom.

I fitted sum rally bulbs years ago and it melted the switch gear, and there not cheap.
Ive had a HID kit fitted now for years with no problems.

I'd go with relays, as it can take the load off your switch. Past 90W you also want to go with ceramic connectors at the bulbs.

Brither with same wattage (osram night-breaker etc.) should produce less heat because more energy is transformed into light, thus less into heat.

Thanks All,
Got a few more questions:

What's the switch gear?
Is this the thing where the indicator/signal stalk/arms fit by the stering wheel?

Will a HID kit be much brighter than higher wattage bulbs? And are higher wattage bulbs much beter than those 55w Osram things?

How do I find out what wattage bulbs are standard (sorry if this is a daft question)?
anto1150 - I think you are telling me they are the same wattage as the Osram's?

Is that relay wiring kit available to buy anywhere if I decide to go that route?
The one in the link is modified from another kit - I would not know where to start.

Thanks. I think I may go for them and give them a try as they are only £20.

I'd be interested in how these 'wonder' bulbs work out for you, I'm on standard bulbs which makes country lanes interesting

Now, i´m using osram night breaker and they are great (and street-legal btw.).

I'd also check out Daniel Stern Lighting. He gives lots of really valid advice about lighting decisions.

I've been using Night Breakers for 2 years and very happy with them.

@ antgtv,
Yes, they're standard wattage.

Has anyone used Osram Nightbreaker Plus?

They seem to be the same wattage but have been "tweaked to give a longer life" (http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/accesso...t-breaker-plus).

Not picking on you in particular, or taking a biggoted stance, but I never understand this often repeated comment. If your standard UK headlights are fresh and working as they should, no more light is needed for regular driving. If you are hooning along at night with nothing coming in the opposite direction, main beam is more than sufficient; infact, excellent. If another car is coming the other way, brighter bulbs will do nothing other than dazzle the other driver a little bit more than usual.

I know that the trend for modern cars is brighter and whiter, but I see no advantage for regular road use, and only the negative of blinding other road users.

Can someone explain why I should 'upgrade' my UK lights? If there is a genuine reason, I am more than willing to add it to the list of things to do. (I get that US spec. lights are another matter).
