My paint is really beginning to show its age, has anyone priced what a good, but not showcar, paintjob? I have a lot of oxidation going on would a clay bar help?

The PO had my car's front resprayed. Forward of the doors. Not a fantastic job. What really bugs me is you can still see where the chips were, because of the divots/low spots where the chips weren't sanded smooth. I would post some pictures of your car in the Concours forum, and those guys will tell you exactly what you can do to get the paint back. Clay will remove small debris from the paint, but not remove the oxidation.

On a related note - if you were to respray an entire car - would you go with the newer 2-stage paint system or stick with the single-stage (assuming that's what's on the car)?

On my black car I'd stay single-stage; easier to maintain IMO.

Metallics or a bare-metal respray.... two stage.

I'd first look into a full paint correction... be warned though, a full paint correction is labor intensive and a can easily north of $1,000, but I'd
rather have the original finish brought back to life than a mediocre respray, even if it ran 2-3 grand.
Where do you live?

Here are a couple links to a few Porsche's that were brought back to life...

In my opinion, the best detailing blog on the web...

I don't have any detailers that I can recommend in Georgia.
Next spring my c4 will have a full paint correction done by a local company that mainly does restorations. Estimate a couple months ago was 1,800-2,200.
They do stunning work.

I've never heard of a 'full paint correction'; do they put on any new paint?

I can fix dull; I can't fix thin spots, bumper impact cracks, or the odd rust bubble.

I have some contacts of painters in North Carolina, but have moved back to Georgia and don't have any good groups here to go to, i can't really afford a good 5-8k paintjob at the moment.

No new paint on a paint correction, except they might touch up a rock chip.

If your paint is original and simply dull/faded/scratched/swirl marks, then a full paint correction would be a good first step. My estimate was 18-22 hrs of labor.

Paint correction?

Are you referring to wet sand & buff? If so, 18-22 hours seems a little high.

I am biting the bullet and doing a complete paint job in all my cars...

'83 - because of the transformation, just the only way to do it.

'81 - because of the condition of the current paint (owner prior to the guy that I bought it from did a poor job of respray with many areas painted over, washer nozzels, some rubber trim, etc.), plus I am installing RS bumpers and I want to change the color to that of a 356... Jade Green Metallic...

'91 - Because overtime it has acquired various shades of red (rear spoiler install, dual exhaust bumper corner, replacement of the L-shape side moldings...). I want it to look like new again.

Since you have nothing to loose, if the problem is just oxidation, wet sand and buff that puppy! It might give you the results you are looking for. More serious than that and you are looking at a couple of thousand dollars for a decent job, and budget for rubber trim (not inexpensive). And by decent it means removing all the glass, fenders, bumpers, (so that all rubber trim can be removed), door handles, etc. IMHO is the only way that it would look right...

Best of luck. Whatever route you take, do share photos of before and after.
