Hi, I am refurbishing all of my calipers and installing new spring plates. The problem is that I cant find a part number in the PET for the spring plates on the rear 2 piston calipers.. My local Porsche center could not find it either and their most experienced 964 mechanic said that they werent supposed to be installed on the rear calipers.. Is there a TSB stating that they shall be removed??
According to this diagram, there are no spring plates on the older (2 piston ) rear calipers. I just went out to the garage to check my old calipers and they do not have any spring plates either.
That's odd because I'm sure I recall the same problem as Morten. I gave up on doing mine because I soon did the 4 pot upgrade. Once I'd removed the 2 pots I remember removing the plates, cleaning away the corrosion and refitting the plates with new small bolts and then selling them on ebay (went to a VW guy). Unfortunately, I therefore don't have my old calipers to check.
I guess what I'm saying is, whether they are 2 pots or 4 pots, the plates can easily be re-used once the corrosion underneath is cleaned away. You just need to find some suitable button head bolts to re-fit them with.
Yes same PET page i have been looking at.. I can guarantee you that mine had spring plates when I took them apart. My problem is that one of them broke during the violent bolt undoing involving a chisel. Since yours dont have them Steen, I guess i can go non-spring plate from now on..?
I'd be VERY cautious about running without them. Just disassembling mine at the moment (lots of heat required after seals removed) and note that the clearance between caliper and pad would be unacceptably high without the plates in place.
You can certainly get the button screws from Type911 (they're common to other calipers) - I'd be surprised if you really can't get the plates too.
I am still searching for a supplier of the spring plates for the rear calipers. Does anyone have a good idea as to whom might have these lying around? Dont want to go for the 4 pots yet..
Have a chat with Matthew at Type911.co.uk.
No affiliation but he's always come up trumps for me.
If the worse comes to the worse, consider having your local engineering company make one up for you - after all it's only a small piece of bent stainless steel with a hole in it and you should have 3 others to use as a template.
