Default 964RS N/GT without rollcage?

I have been looking at a 1992 964RS, and according to the VIN.nr it is one of the 290 N/GT's but this car has got the carpet's, leather seats, and a bolted in rollcage in the rear. Was any of these cars delivered without the welded in cage? Or is this a car that has got a new body?
It has the seamwelded body, alu. hood, magnesium wheels etc.. So as far as I can se it is a "standard" RS with a bolted cage.
To buy or not to buy.....?

I believe the weld in cage with some other raceware was an opt #003 so in therory it could be possible but who do that?
If it is a club sport (n/gt) that should have the M003 opt, as far as I know thats what makes it a n/gt and not just an RS.
However, Porsche was flexible and if you were someone who bought the car they would make special cars.
All the vin tags match?
You could always get it certified from Porsche.
Also is there a built sheet with the option list?
I wouldn't pay more than what you can verify it is.

As far as i understand from this, the car was delivered from factory with leather seats and carpets?
But what about the roll cage?
Colour codes ? is that for a blue car?

The cage should have been part of the M003 opt.

I would be very careful on this car and the price. It seems unlikely that you would order an N-GT and spec (if you could) no cage. As that is what makes this car so special, a race car that could be driven to events on the road and back again. This N-GT would not be FIA compliant and so could not enter the events, so why not buy a LWT.
I would suggest that being a competition type car it is highly likely as you state it may have been re-shelled into a non N-GT shell.
I would suggest you contact Martin on 964rsdatabase, he will fill in the questions you ask! He may also have the history and early pics!

www.964rsdatabase.com

Or also post your question on the Porsche Club of Great Britain forum 964RS section. Lots of enthusiastic owners in the UK with LOTS of information to share.

and vin decodes as a Clubsport / RSR / N-GT

The VIN puts it within the range for Clubsport/RSR/N-GT. Since these were ordered through the racing department (and during the heyday of the Sonderwunsch program) I wouldn't be surprised if someone ordered a Clubsport and had it outfitted in this manner, though I don't know why anyone would.

Yeah, I don't know either, a bit strange but possible.

It migth have been ordered from factory with the bolt in cage, since they already put in carpets and leather seats, they may have replaced the weld in cage by a bolted one, for easier access...
But how can I find out if this is the case?

There were also overseas locations that restricted cars having welded cages, similar to Cup cars to USA. Where once imported were sent to approved outlets for fitting.

USA / Australia / South Africa I seem to recall having 993 Clubsports imported without the Cage.

Could it have been destined for overseas.

You should be able to see remnants of the welds if a weld-in cage was removed. Take out the carpets and look.
For absolute confirmation of how the car was ordered from the factory, you'll need to track down the original owner.

Interestingly, I checked my old copy of 'Lightweight Carrera Confusion' written by Bob Gagnon in 1993 and published in Panorama (the PCA magazine). Bob writes that a weld-in cage was not standard on the M003 cars. Instead it was available as an option. The weld-in cage was only standard on the M001 Cup cars. Here's his list which was gathered at the time from Porsche.

*Deletion of interior carpeting, headliner and A/B pillar covering
*Painting of interior to match exterior color
*Shortened knee padding on lower dashboard to clear roll bar installation if ordered
*Driver's side sun visor only
*Provision to unlock trunk and fuel door from drivers seat
*Engine compartment insulation deleted
*Provision for six point seat belt for driver and passenger
*DME Brain box moved behind drivers seat (standard location under seats in way of crotch belts mounts)
*Provision for hand held fire extinguisher on passenger floor
*Cable activated master switch from inside of car
*Recaro SPG bucket seats for passenger and driver

You should be able to verify some of these items. Others (like the Recaro buckets which would have had option codes 388 & 389) were superseded by the options specified on your list.

In short, based on VIN and Option code, the car you are looking at is an authentic Clubsport. Buy it!
