17" 996 wheels on a 964?
I have a 996 with the original 17" "twist" wheels (7x17" 55mm offset front and 9x17" 55mm offset rear) that I'm about to replace with 18" wheels for aesthetic reasons. The tires are original Michelin N-spec 205/50 and 255/40 with 5/32" tread still left on them (7800 miles on the car, wheels and tires).
Rennlisters on the 993 board said these would fit a 964 -- and I found a photo of these wheels on Wheel Enhancement's web site. I'm just not sure whether 9" x 17" rears will fit -- there is also an 8.5" x 17" version that is used on Boxsters.
Does anyone know if 9" x 17" rears will fit a narrow body 964?
Here's a picture of my car with these wheels and a close up of one of my wheels.

17 x 9, 55mm offset wheels are approved by Porsche for 964 (see TSB 4440). I run Carrera II wheels in that size as my track wheels.
That said, you want to be careful. If your car is lowered and you run a fair amount of rear negative camber and you run a tire that is perhaps a bit fat for a 255 tire, you could get some rubbing on the right rear oil lines. Ask me how I know this. :-)
I run very close to RS ride height, and about 2 degrees negative in back, and with Nitto NT01 track tires, I found that I needed to add some rear spacers to avoid rubbing the top oil line in the wheel well. 7mm was not quite enough. I currently have 14mm, and that seems to clear the oil line.
BTW, that is not a picture of a 964. :-)

I don't know what I was thinking of when I posted the photo of the red 911, which was a 1985-1989 body style. I edited my original post to remove that photo.
