I am somewhat confused by how PC softeware works, specifically the scantool codes.

What does the .ini file do?
Why is it placed in the windows folder?

What does the .cfg file do?
Why isn't it placed in the windows folder?

The trouble codes file? How does scantool use it, if it does?

Does the scantool executable only look in its folder for info files?

If I move the .exe file out of the folder is that an issue?

I'm using Win7, and I don't have a scantool.ini file on my harddrive - I thnik that's a legacy file from WinXP and before. I recall that listed the default comport used by scantool.exe. Now, it's controlled by the USB/Serial driver listed in Device Manager.

Scantool gets all the info from scantool.cfg file - this includes handshake address and baudrate to any control unit, error codes and associated description, conversion of temperature from HEX to a meaningful reading, etc.

Just reolace the cfg and code files i gave you yesterday and you will be good to go. You are overthinking this

well , my problem is that only some of the functions would work. Motronic would not.

Then if i used the same .exe file from a different folder nothing happened.

just seems strange. i'll play with it this weekend.



Fixed. I had software conflicts.
