Same question here. As of which engine number did P started to use gaskets? Thanks!

I could probably dig it up.

But really, it wasn't a performance issue at all and most of them have been converted to gaskets now.

Up to engine no. 62 M 52757 Tip 62 M 06836 MT were gasketless.

You dont need those gaskets. that fix was only to keep the cylindars from leaking oil when the engine was cold in your garage. It's not a performance issue. There is no oil in the upper cyclinder to leak...when cold the oil backs up into the case and up to the level of the pistons, and when you let it sit, eventually the oil seeps past the rings and you can get a weep.

If you have good compression when the engine is hot, then all good - no need to worry abt whether you have the old or new cylinders - from a performance perspective...We decided w mine to not make the change for this reason. And since having Steve W do the heads, they are bone dry anyway...

thanks for the info. Question is related to this car:
http://www.classic-sportscars.be/ind...carnet-porsche
What do you think? Could this potentially be a good buy? It looks dead original to me but am not an expert. I am living 350km (200 miles) away and not sure if it is worth it. Already called the garage where the car was maintained there they told me all checks were done but no major maintenance was needed.

Thanks for the help!

If you are going to buy a 964. talk to the guy selling it and arrange for the car to be sent to an independant shop for a PPI. Have the shop do a full leakdown test, not just a compression test. And have them check over the rest of the car as well.

If it doesnt look good after the Leakdown, move on to the next car. But by far the most expensive and common thing that you will find, is that it needs an upper end rebuild - and that will add a lot of cost later...So if it doesnt need the engine dropped, and all else checks out, then go ahead...

FYI - a good PPI isn't inexpensive, but well worth it.
