Default before I forget... what bolts for seats?

Anyone bought locally at the hardware store, or does it have to be Porsche parts?

I replaced a few of my seat bolts with grade 8 bolts from my local hardware store.

Do I remember? I can check on it tonight when I get home. I suspect they are M8x1.25 approx 20-25mm in length but let me confirm.

Edit: I just confirmed via the PET Seats catalog. The bolt sizes are M8x1.25 x 20mm. You want an allen head.

If you go for allen head ones, you need low profile ones i think, that's what the factory ones are.

The low profile heads are not required, unless you want the original look. I have the standard heads and have no problems.

as long as the heads don't interfere with seat travel, I'm good with either variety. Now, if they had them in shiny chrome

and thx. I'l get some today. I want to pull the driver's seat too, and clean up all the crap. While I was cleaning under the passenger seat, I noticed the wire tape had become brittle. Anyone re-wrap the wires, and with what?

I thought I read here once that these bolts may be engineered for crash performance -- designed around yield under stress?

The thought I came away with was that, when needed, I'd pay Porsche what they asked to get the correct bolt for the seat rails.

just to clarify when you purchase a metric fastener there are several classes most common are 8.8 or 10.9 which are equal to grade 5 and grade 8 respectivly they have similar ksi /tensile ratings and shear strengths. the factory ones are fairly soft and would guess them to be class 8.8 and class 10.9 are through hardend and would not strip the heads as easy as the factory heads seem to

both are sufficient to keep the seat in place, so either should be fine, right? In this case, too hard is not a bad thing? it's not like a sheer pin where you want it to break under stress.

If memory serves, I have 8.8 bolts. I haven't been in an accident to test them (knock on wood) but so far they seem to be working well. I would think the 10.8 would be fine too.

On the plus side of using the local hardware bolts is that I was less worried about stripping the heads than the factor bolts.

I had to use aftermarket bolts when fitting my recaro PPs because the heads on the factory bolts are too large to fit in the recaro seat runners. Just thought I'd mention it.

I used black oxide 12,9 allen head ones I picked up at the local Ace hardware store. The old ones I wrestled out seemed to be made of soft brass. There may be some "shear force" reason Porsche chose the fasteners, but I wanted to be able to use reuse if needed, and the 12,9 grade ones are that.
