I'm scratched up and scraped up but happy. I followed one of the excellent old posts here from DFinnegan and technically it wasn't very hard. The only tough part was reinstalling the airbox/MAF unit back into the car. It is very particular and I wound up breaking off one of the backside clips from the airbox. I can still use the clip but when I remove it comes apart free from airbox.
The insides of both manifolds were coated in gritty slime and the downpipes going into the intake valves were very dirty (the valve areas themselves looked nice and clean however). I was able to do a good job cleaning everything with carb cleaner and used up 1.5 rolls of paper towels.
I took the car out for a post cleaning run and the result seems to be much more low rev power. If I'm cruising at 30-40 mph in 3rd gear and get on the throttle I feel a nice strong pull from 2-4k rpms that I didn't have before. I'm surprised that simply cleaning off the light coating of inner gunk could result in such an improvement.
All in all a very worthwhile project and a great way to spend a Saturday.
