Stop by the UPS Porsche trailer for a cool one...
Some people say its cooler after the sun goes down...Whahahaha

9-10-2012 Progress Report 964 Rebuild/Upgrade
We are making progress on the engine rebuild --
The engine now is a 3.8L with JE 12.5CR 102 MM pistons and EBS
reconditioned cylinders- and Webcams 20/21 cam rebuild
heads - valve seats 3 way regrind - all new valves -EBS race springs and TI retainers
Crankshaft polished - magnifluxed - rods reconditioned (big hole recut) all balanced...
The intake manifolds - all 6 are cracked and are being replaced #*&#plastic...
You will notice the Patrick pulley replacements - there is also a flywheel to
adapt to the 915 clutch/transmission - and a 964 adapted wire harness from Patrick
The existing 3.2L is being removed from the car and the tin modified for the 3.6L.
Thanks again to Don Jackson Enterprises Porsche Independent Service and
Roland doing the major work assembling the engine and DJ who guides the
project. And, thanks to John who has done many other projects on this car.
Please notice how clean this engine is -- thanks to Roland!

I just dumped a pile of stuff at 20th including a set of plastic manifolds...the may still have them. Or you could go ITB's and Motec...

Thanks for the info on 20th Street Auto -- DJ called them first ...nada...
I prefer to use new plastic parts if we couldn't get aluminum.
We hope to make the NASA Inde track on Oct 5...but if not there is always another
at Firebird late Oct. Our real goal is to be able to race at Chuckwalla in Dec.
The plan is to be fully ready for Jan 2013 to start the next NASA season.

Engine is in the car and had the first 2 day break in runs...

11-25-2012 Progress Report 964 Rebuild/Upgrade
We have finished with the 1992 964 engine rebuild and installation into my Son's 1978 911 SC race car.

The 964 engine has so far proven to be a very good engine.
We towed the car to California to Sergio Nardi's shop - Game-Face Motorsports in La Habra -- where Steve Wong worked for 5 hours on the Dyno Tune (we had an issue with the throttle cable adjusting nut coming loose and changing the WOT switch activation.
Steve spends a lot of time smoothing the A/F ratio -- there were 28 Dyno runs total.
The bottom line is 270 RWHP and 250+ RWT with JE 102MM 12.5 CR pistons, Webcams 20/21 cams, custom headers and stock 964 intake.
Don Jackson Enterprises in Phoenix is the engine builder and conversion
into the 1978 911 SC race car (we took out a perfectly good 3.2L engine).
Thanks to Roland for his efforts and patience with this Dad always asking
questions to learn as much as I can about Porsche engines/cars (never too
old to learn something new).
This process takes a lot of patience ......

Thanks for the posts and letting us follow along. I was wondering... do you recommend the the Hargett?Tarett valve covers? Did/do they meet your expectations? I am about to replace mine and for $600... I was wondering?

replaced Mags that were corroding -- these are very shinny!
I'll try to respond again after the first valve adjustment in a few weeks...

12-14-2012 Progress Report 964 Race Engine Rebuild/Upgrade
Well.........latest report on engine after running hard at weekend track event
Two things:
1) When the valve rocker arms were removed for oil leak sealing pitting was found;
they need to be reconditioned
Note: this was about the only part not refreshed or replaced
2) We need more cooling (as several had mentioned earlier- we were just waiting
to see how much more we needed) as temps went to 250F when engine was pressed
to 7K RPM during race conditions - it would cool back to 210F when shifting at 6200.
Two front fender coolers will be added to the 26" front center cooler.
Note: the Tarett valve covers are leak free. The rocker shafts do leak if you don't seal them on an engine rebuild.
My son is happy with the new engine and the increase in power...
