Almost there!

Got the 2nd motor, pressed the bushing on, the fan onto the bushing, fitted it all in, and tried before buttoning up. So far so good. I have all 4 speeds on both motors, a crawl when the fan selector is on "0", and all the servomotors work. It is impressive how much air the new fans move! never had it so efficient.

Remains the fuel pump to reconnect, the fuel vapor tank to refit, the air tubes in the footwells.

I also took the time while the car was apart to change the shifter bushings, the front anti-roll bar bushings, some fuel lines.

Great work! Where did you get the right side motors, George?

Got the motors on german ebay, 120€ apiece.
Started the car tonight, purrs like a kitten.
I still have to fit the paper ducts in the footwell, but that is for tomorrow.
Connecting the fuel lines under the tank made me feel like a gynaecologist..... Beware that the main fuel line from the tank is on backorder from the factory. I had to get creative with a longer 12mm line to have nice regular curves without kinks.

Update for finished job.
Had the AC filled 400 miles ago, and so far so good. The Griffiths cooler seems to work a treat. Very efficient cooling coupled with the new fans make for a much more agreable drive. Never had it so good in a 911.

I'm about to attempt changing both fans myself! I have a brand new one plus a used one is decent shape. So my fears are correct- it does need a full fuel tank removal

Great thread, George! Thanks so much for the contribution -- I have no doubt this will be useful for many in the future. I replaced everything but my compressor a year and a half ago and I hope I never have to go back in there again. The biggest things that worry me about the system are the fans -- for which you've come up with a great alternative. Now I just need to deal with my CCU which refuses to operate the recirc button properly.

The tank needs to come out, but its not as awful as you might think. As we saw here its a great opportunity to RnR the lines etc while it's out.

For anyone else reading this thread, the gas tank doesn't need to come out to change the fans on a 1991 C2.

Can you get the evaporator out without removing the gas tank? I'd presume it needs to be levered forward by some distance?

I pulled both of my HVAC fans without removing the gas tank. I undid the holding strap and moved it forward an inch then disconnected the overfill tank (?) on top for a little more clearance. My 92 C2 also has AC so I moved those lines slightly (did not need to disconnect them only removed two attachment pts near the firewall) to remove left fan cover.
