Decision taken.
My mechanic is opening it up to figure it out. He has an idea where the part belongs but I don't want to get into that until I know for sure. We are going to use this as an opportunity to tidy a few other things up and we have agreed a maximum price regardless of what he finds. The price is not small but we are both taking a chance.
