Default Factory 993 TT Big Red plus 965 rotors - pad fittment issues

We've been working on a big red upgrade on Frank's 964 today.

Everything fairly smooth except. . .

The pads friction material seems to overlap the edge of the rotor by a couple millimeters. They seem too big, though they are correct in all other dimensions.

Both hawk blues and ebc yellows have the same issue.

Pics to follow shortly.

Can any experts confirm if this is normal/safe for this combination of discs and calipers? Can you run pads like this or do you need to trim down the friction material, so they dont overhang?

thanks

Alex and Frank

To me, the gap between the rotor and the caliper looks too big. If the caliper could sit a little lower then the friction material would be in line with the edge of the rotor. My reasoning for this is that the clearance between my standard calipers and rotors is minimal. Have a look at your rears to see what I mean (pop the rear Hawks in to confirm this).

Hmm, the caliper is flat up against the adapter, so it couldn't go closer.

the calipers from 993TT fronts are the same as the 3.6 turbo. 1994
I believe you have the wrong rotors. you need the 3.6 t

They are factory 965 rotors so they should be 322mm, for the rotors to be wrong, they would have to be 320mm or something and there is no such factory disc. From Bill Verburgs page I see 3.3 T and 3.6 T have the same rotors.

It seems the adapters may be the issue.

So the original q was; is it ok to run with this small overlap? Can the pad friction material be trimmed?

We're on a tight timeline for spa/nurburgring on friday. So we just need to figure out if the original rotors and calipers need to go back on.

I would worry that the top of the pads would start to break up and cause you some issues, especially since the brakes are going to be used hard. Can you put the standard brakes/rotors back on for the trip?

Once out there, you'll be able to have a look at Grant's big red set up to see how his pads fit - he has EBC yellows in and I'll have his Hawks with me (we can pop one in to see how it sits).

If you search "adpaptors" on this forum you'll see that you're not the first to run into problems when doing this upgrade. It would also be good to see a pic of the adaptor in place with the caliper and rotor removed.

Fingers crossed for you both that you can work it out in time.

Mine have a similar overlap, about 1mm or so. Never posed a problem for me with the pads disintegrating, despite lots of hard braking!

Just took these pics of the pads as I'll be putting the yellowstuff in tomorrow night....I use redstuff on the road

The adpater is too tall. Estimating from the photos, you need to reduce the adapter by 1-2 mm (just an estimate)

Who did you get the adpaters from?

Looks like yours have worn OK. I'm less worried now that I've seen those pics.

I think you are right autokurl. They are fvd, supplied by design911, as per packaging above. In addition to being too tall, the holes did not have thread cut all the way so the caliper bolts needed trimming down to allow them to torque up properly.

Thanks cheeksyboy that's the info we were looking for. looks same as we got. Sounds like there wouldn't be any dramas to run with a little overlap.

Didn't want any oddities coming up on the way to Spa so in the end we trimmed down the backing plate of the pads so they fit a couple of mm lower in the caliper.
