Default Shifter boot replacement.

Anyone who has ever pulled off the (hard rubber?) **** assembly from the metal shift shaft? I'm not Conan, but no weakling either, but abandoned the attempt once already in fear of breaking assembly below, or knocking my front teeth out or worse when the it finally "lets go". Any hints to success would help give me the courage to give it another shot, and be highly appreciated. THANX.

How deep are the teeth marks on the gearlever, tho?

s4magman: Is it just a continuous pull. i.e. any twisting-turning movements to any avail? I don't have to be afraid of breaking or? anything deeper down? Thanx.

Default Lift the skirt and look?

If I am not mistaken, there was a model change on shifter boots. On some, and I can't remember the years, you have to pull the skirt up as high as you can and loosen a set screw? I would look first before I give it the heave-ho. Just a thought.

I have a '90 C2 and only needed a continuous pull. It sits snug but wasn't overwhelmingly difficult to remove. Perhaps newer models have a set screw as mentioned earlier.

My shift ****/boot is out of a '94, and there is no set screw, nor any hole for a set screw to go in...but, as others said, worth a look?

I believe some of the later 993/996 shifters have a set screw.

Mine is a '91. Looks like I'll have to check for set screw first--would feel like a ........."well, you know the feeling"....... if I was fighting the tide. Thanx

As long as we are on the subject: What's the strategy for pulling the leather edges up from the console? Go Arnold? Or is there a more subtle approach?

The edge of the shift boot you mean? You have to push down until it unclips, then angle the rectangular frame and pull it out.

Yes, that is right, the edges, where they meet the hard console. You just push down anywhere until it unclips? Is it finicky or is there any risk of breaking the clips?

There are actually 2 metal clips on the left side that hold the wire rim of the boot in place. Here is a good DIY to help. Most of the DIY is not relevant but the first few steps show how to disengage the boot from the console. Hope this helps.

But then you may have to spend the rest of your life explaining to strangers, why you have an H-pattern permanently imprinted on your forehead

Sorry to keep essentially hijacking everyone else's threads - but quick note on a Shift boot...

A few months back there was a thread about the Cashmere Beige Shift boots- and limited availability - there were four remaining at the factory for original cashmere beige boots for our cars. I got the last one of those four through Susnet. I subsequently bought a Weighted boot and am waiting for that to arrive.

If anyone needs/wants the original brand new cashemere beige boot, I'll likey have it available for what i paid... Jst throwing it out there...PM me or grab the other thread and we can discuss there, just that this thread made me think about it....

Quick Reply: Shifter boot replacement.
