Toying with the idea of powder coating the alloys orange. Anyone any good with photoshop that could 'tango' the wheels on this picture? Maybe with an orange 'Porsche' sidescript.

Well it's been a long slong and she's not completely done yet but she's back temporarily. Pennings in Leighton Buzzard have done a superb job on the body and paint and RPM Technik have also worked their magic on the engine. She was put on the dyno the other day and was showing 270bhp.

Definitely would recommend replacing the clutch slave cylinder for an MPL one. It's so much lighter and easier to drive!

RS engine mounts have gone in as well.

Your car looks great! Have you done anything with the suspension?

Please consider post your ride height in this thread:

https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...de-height.html

Cheers,

Jim

It's got KW V3 suspension on it at the moment. Will post in the thread when I know the actual ride height

Adam, car looks really great!

I am picking mine up from Project Nine on Saturday, just back from a major service plus bits and a geometry set up (to try to take out some of the understeer). Can't wait!

Just a quick question, if a car is taken back to bare metal like that, does it not remove the galvanising layer on the steel?

There is no sign of rust on the wings on mine but I bet there would be something if i took them off. Also will need to get the rear wing resprayed at some point as the touching up I did looks crap. Not sure whether to wait and get a complete work over as you did or just get the patch redone.

Cheers Jack.

I imagine if you took it back you'd remove some of the galvanising. Saying that, there was rust that needed treating and I guess you could argue, do you let it continue to rust or go all the way back to bare metal and respray? I guess once I'd respray one area I'd probably decide that it'd probably be worth doing the whole thing. In for a penny in for a pound.

I suppose that the underside is still galvanised and the new paintwork on top will still provide adequate protection. I hadn't actually thought about this to be honest so will speak to Pennings who did it to see what they have to say on the subject.

There wasn't any sign of rust on the wings before I took them off, but like Frank I ummed and ahh'd and eventually decided to take the wings off and have a look. Lucky that I did as you can see from the photos.

I'm glad I did the whole body and the body shop that I took mine to were top notch. Obviously I had concerns having not used them before but having seen some amazing work they did on a 997 where pretty much every panel had been damaged by someone and having seen the work that they had done on other 964's from RPM technik I was happy for them to have it. I did toy with Specialised Paintwork but I liked the thought of having it local to me. I now know that the whole car is pretty much sorted.

I'll admit to being slightly OCD and initially I wanted just a tide over spray and touch up on the major issues (scuttle rust etc) until after the olympics and into 2103 but plumped for the whole thing. If you want I can send you some more photos to look at. It really is a quality job. Thanks to my OCD I'm now sourcing a lightweight RS interior in black, pole positions and a momo alcantara cup steering wheel to really finish it off. Oh and some decent speakers.... the list goes on sadly...it really is an addiction. I feel bad for keeping her outside and not in a garage. Dave, the guy that was in charge of doing the work on the body really did look quite sad to see her go! On a side note ,having been driving it for the last few days, I'm really glad I replaced the clutch save cylinder for the MPL one I bought on ebay as it's so much lighter and easier to drive.

How is your seat refurb coming on?

I'm sure we'll get a chance to swap notes on a meet sometime soon

Galvanization is a achieved by a zinc coating to protect the steel. Zinc paints are available.

I would like to hear what Pennings will report.

From what I've read, modern epoxy primer (I get the impression that's what a lot of pros use now, Pennings too I guess) is nearly as good as factory galvanising. Also the zinc in the galvanising is sacrificial so in the all hot rust areas the zinc has been eaten by now anyway so the loss is lessened when you're dealing with a 20 year old car to start with.

I thought there would've been more cobalt blues in the UK

Got a reply from the body shop and this is what they said :

We use a Sikkens, 2 pack epoxy primer, first though we apply a wash coat which is Zinc rich coating which is a corrosion inhibitor and bonding agent to the bare metal. On the inner panels where we break the paint for welding they get etched, primed, spray sealed and black stone chip. The arches before top coat get a stone chipping sealer just like the factory to help with stone flings. *When the car was assembled the key areas where they rust (mainly around the bumper rubbers) where assembled with a clear protective wax to help water proof the joints where water could ingress.
