Question Best modern radio?

I have a very nice McIntosh MX406 radio, complete with the 6-CD changer that lives under the driver's seat of my C2. But guess what: I can haul more tunes along in an iPod, and that little device has rendered CD changers obsolete. Who cares if the sound isn't as good? The car's not the environment for close listening, anyway.

I've looked at several options for modern radios that have easier iPod connections than the McIntosh, but most are garish & gaudy things with elaborate screens.

Has anyone done a more thorough look at what's out there now, and have you (I hope) identified a decent-looking and decent-functioning AM/FM radio that has an up-front iPod connection and, at most, capacity to play a single CD? Willing to share the results of your explorations?

Waiting with bated breath ...

Can you take a shot of the McIntosh in the 964. I was wondering what it looked like with the rest of the dash...

+1 on the pic

The Alpine CDA 117 has burr brown circuitry, had USB in front and rear so you can keep the iPod in the glove compartment and no wires out the front..great unit for the money but frankly anything you can get will be a
large step backwards from a Mac..in sound and looks

I run Fabspeed sport and cat bypass and am partially deaf anyhow so run of the mill Sony works for me when the roof is on, when its off so is the music...time to hear the car..

As far as I can tell.... the mx406 has a cd slot in the headunit and has an aux input.
Are you looking for a headunit that controls an ipod also?

If you're looking for purely sound quality, look for a headunit made before 2003.
Eclipse is my favorite... model 8053 to be exact.

Of course... any system is only as good as your weakest link.
Don't skimp on speakers (quality, not quantity) or amp.

Eclipse is a great unit but requires external amplification (and you dont want to use the OEM amp!!!)

Absolutely right...
My setup...
Eclipse head unit
mids and tweeters in the doors
no rear speakers
5 channel amp
subs behind seats http://www.caraudioinnovations.com/porsche.htm
...sounds amazing, but then so does the car!

Becker also have an iPod kit that is compatible with various of their OEM looking head units:

Becker iPod Interface Kit

Here's my adventure with a new Alpine. CDs, CD-R, USB Stick, iPod, iPhone with Bluetooth-handsfree.

The Alpine may not be, ah 'ahem, high-end enough for you if you are coming from a McIntosh (Yes, Pictures Please!)

The mx406 is as you describe.

I replaced all speakers first thing. Using the stock amp, as it was easier. Have the stock head unit saved.

I have a cable that's stereo RCA from the back of the head unit, comes out from under @ console as a stereo mini-plug suitable for iPod. Only problem I have with it (beside the sorta inconvenient iPod arrangement) is that I'm to chicken to jam it in (lots of wiring behind it) so it isn't flush with the face of the dash. Will get some pics Saturday & post'em.

So I figure it is worth more to someone else who wants the multi-CD cassette.

Now that is sharp-looking! Probably priced to match, right?

That was a chore I was hoping to avoid. And an expense ditto. Oh, well ... ars longa & all that.

Hey, that just reminded me that I have a brand new CD8053 sitting in storage. I've even got the accompanying Eclipse Commander unit that gives it voice functionality. As well as a set of Focal Utopia splits. Ah, good old SQ days. I ended up going with a Nakamichi CD700 with Seas components and u-Dimension amps in my old ride (a Camry!).

I wonder if there's still a market for this old gear? I should prob just buy an old VW Golf and install it all - there's no way it's going in the 964, the only thing I listen to in there is the sublime sound of the 3.6 ;-)
