Default Silly question, but need to ask..

Now that is winter and some people are putting thier p-cars away, I noticed in a few posts that after a few weeks of parking the car, that the DME should be pulled and started a few times to move around the oil. A few questions on this, as I have NEVER done this and my car has sat for 6+ months before being started.

1. what is the risk of NOT doing this to get the oil going
2. which DME and what is the procedure so I can do this next time
3. could this contribute or be a factor in my excessive oil leak

p.s Sorry for the noob questions, but I think I need to be educated on this and my first Porsche was a water cooled so I didn't need to do this.

I have never pulled the DME relay when bringing the cars out of hibernation. I just start them and drive them gently until warmed up. Is there any harm in doing what you suggest? No.

Could this cause an oil leak? I wouldn't think so.

This is a good practice for the water pumpers, too, not just the air-cooled Porsches.

Also recomended on the Turbos (993 and 996) when doing an oil change.

JMHO,...but thats the right thing to do. One doesn't need to crank the engine, pull the DME relay, face east, nor make an incantation (a tasty burnt offering on the BBQ cannot hurt, tho).

The keys to storing a car for the winter months is to:

1) Change the oil and filter (use a 15w-40, 15w-50, or 20w-50).

2) Top off the fuel tank and add Stabil to the fuel.

3) Keep the battery on a maintainer of choice.

4) Inflate the tires to max pressure (remember to lower them to running pressures before the first drive) to keep them from flatspotting. I recommend putting carpet squares under the tires if you have a bare concrete floor.

If you REALLY want to do this right, disable the (stupid) clutch interlock so you can start the car without holding the pedal down. This really helps save the crankshaft's thrust bearings.

For longer term storage such as a year or more, one would pull the DME relay (not the DME) and crank the engine a bit to keep a film of oil on everything.

My car is already in storage and I did the above. I'm curious about your statement about the clutch. I could swear that I don't need the clutch to start my car. I thought this was factory. Apparently this is not the case?

Thank you, Travis

Travis,

I added that comment knowing there are many members of the 993 Forum that read this one and that's mainly for their benefit.

Ok...that's cool...thank you Steve. I've found the PO had done a few upgrades but thought I figured them all out.

So, are you saying that the car should always be started without engaging the clutch pedal?

I have never had to engage the clutch pedal on my 91 C2 to start it.
Of course I have never accidentally tried to start it in 1st gear and have the car lunge forward

Yessir,..that's exactly what I do with all my cars, after assuring myself that the transmission is in neutral.

Yes, verifying the car is in neutral is a good habit to get into. I do it by reflex even though my Boxster S has a stupid interlock. Fortunately, 95 993s are not equipped with interlocks.

Cheers,
Joe

Horrible. And wasteful.

DME is the car's brain, in a sense.
