Can you find out were the work was done and contact the shop to verify?

Ask the seller for the VIN and check with the shop. The shop may have the VIN # on file along with any work that they did.

For starters I would want to know what the current mileage is and at what mileage (and date) the alleged work was undertaken ?

I can't imagine any decent tech not doing a re-ring (p&c's are usually ok unless starship mileage covered) as part of a top end rebuild, so I would be having a leakdown test performed by your tech (not his) and seeing if the numbers corroborate.

Also, a word of caution; remember that at some point you may be a future seller of the vehicle under discussion. In my profession we say that if something is undocumented, it didn't happen ......

Good luck!

I guess if whoever it was that couldn't be bothered to keep the receipts for major engine work, might not have been bothered about a lot of other things as well. For me, no record of what was done equals no top end rebuild. Therefore I would look up on it as an X mileage car in Y condition that has had no major engine work and price it accordingly.

Its being sold via a dealer, who has no invoice for the work nor detail of parts and work. Registered an interest to know exactly what has been done and having a Pre Purchase inspection undertaken with GT-One.
As per your posts, it just seems a bit vague and weird to claim the work has been undertaken but no records.
Cheers Guys!

Why don't you post a photo of the car here? With the number of UK 964 owners on this board it's likely someone will recognize it and will know the previous owner. You might even find details of the work posted here if the PO was a Rennlister.

K226 KNU UK Car Guards red C2 Tiptronic. 113,000 miles on sale via Eporsch. Having a PPI check done for peace of mind.
If anyone has any info please pm me, will pass onto my pal who is really interested in the car.
Cheers guys.

I have just posted on another thread about my woes of buying a car which had a recent engine rebuild. This was documented and by a reputable dealer. However, the head studs were not replaced and I now have a snapped head stud and a rather sick sounding engine... So check yours were done. Maybe pay a bit over the odds for a more invasive PPI so they can take the rocker covers off and maybe do a compression test, etc....

Thanks Stan, the verdict on the car being considered was it was going to cost £8k to get straight. So the overall cost was then £22k and there was a question still over the engine. So this car has been passed by in favour of looking for well maintained examples.
Sorry to hear of the woes for your recent purchase.
Good luck on your engine choice 3.8 is a great option!
