Lots of knowledgeable people here, hopefully you can come up with a good plan!
Thanks, I really do appreciate it!

The knowledge and kindness of the people here has never ceased to amaze me. I know I'll get some great advice and moral support from those who really know what they're talking about.

I picked up a '94 cab with a rod knock three years ago. Luckily the guy literally coasted into his mechanic's shop when he heard the noise. (Car had documented history of low oil pressure at idle, so he was aware.) Still never split the engine apart; have had no need to with the several spares I have around.

But if this thing is non-rebuildable, then just plugging a used engine in is a matter of finding a good one. Of course your mechanic will know that the oil cooling system needs to be completely, exhaustively cleaned. (Helped a DIY-type on an engine rebuild once way back when. Told him to remove the lines and clean the cooler. He didn't. Replacement failed in less than 1K miles.........)

Oh no. Howard, if it helps, I feel so bad about this that it's like it's happening to me personally.

Bad things always seem to come at the worst possible time.

This is the low point though. The only way now is up. Even if it's a tough climb.

Howard,

Condolences, man... That sucks! You do what you have to for your family... that's what's important right now. If the car is required for transport, get her back on the road for minimal $$ possible and don't look back. These cars are built like tanks... when something breaks, replace it and keep on moving... Things do break as you well know... and at the worst possible time! Murphy is alive and well, I'm afraid.

Congrats on the bun in the oven, btw... That's a prize worth more than any Porsche!

Sorry to hear about it. Hopefully you can get her fixed for a sum that you can handle at the moment. I'm still curious as to what happened to make it a non-rebuild.

Sorry for the bad news, Howard. I'm wondering if the timing chain let go. But it's all academic at this point, if it truly isn't rebuildable.
Consider yourself a little bit lucky that it let go at a stoplight, instead of mid-corner someplace.

The good news is, you now have a valid reason to go 3.8.

Best of luck!

Sorry to hear this. hopefully you can get out of this cheaply. I would search around for rebuild on the pricing but to be truthfull with a full motor you probably could find a used motor from a demo shop like oklama etc for 5-7k then costs of install. that should be cheaper then a rebuild

Just do yourself a favor and search the forums for MotorMeister and take heed of the advice.

Thanks sundog. I remember seeing lots of negative comments about motormeister here on the boards over the years. Is there anyone else in the same line of business rebuilding/selling these engines?

Howard - Why not give Parts Heaven or one of the other used parts vendors a call? Maybe they can get one for you?

Tough call - all we can do is offer advice.
My first engine went at 125,000 miles - my car from new, run on Mobile 1
- oil starvation to the third main
A subsequent incident on the next engine resulted in a check and found unusual wear to the third main - again !!
Seems to be a documented issue on the 964 - crops up every now and then on the board.
If your engine has done something similar I would replace all oil lines the tank and cooler.
Shrapnel gets every where and is impossible to clean 100%
Its a misery and you have my every sympathy ( but not my money )

How bad would it have to be (and how easy is it to tell without opening her up) to not be able to rebuild?

Case damage--along with cylinder, crank, piston, valve, and head damage.

If he is telling you it is a loss, most likely case damage is visible.

Wouldn't it have to be REALLY bad to see it from the outside?!!
