Default Preventative maintenance

Those threads where people have the bonnet (hood) release cable snap always give me the jitters. So this weekend I decided it was better to be safe than sorry and replace the cable and fit the emergency release cable at the same time. Bought both of the cables from Porsche for the grand sum of 14 quid:

It's a bit of a fiddly job at the handle end because the lever needs to be taken apart to get the old cable out and the new one attached. Also, the pre 91 latches won't directly accept the emergency cable so I've had to loop it around the mechanism and secure it with the cable clamp. However, I figure that the main cable should last a long time and provide me with peace of mind that I'm not going to get a locked down trunk.

My car also does not have it...I believe it was removed as part of a 1991 Trunk Latch recall, something to do with the carpet binding the latch, but I'm not 100% sure on that....

I think earlydays is right. PET shows the panel (in the diagram) but there is no part number for it which indicates that it was deleted on later models.

Absolutely great idea to get it replaced and have the back up cable... mine snapped within the first few months of ownership... the gf's handbag/ wallet was stuck in the boot - "YOU SHOULD HAVE A CAR THAT BLOODY WORKS!!!" was the earful I got, again!

Speaking of temperamental partners, Em was not impressed with my new red 4 point harnesses.... luckily there'll still be the standard seat belts!

I am sure your miss was upset that she didnt have a matching handbag and shoes to go with the new seatbelts!

Good call Boxsey, definately worth the piece of mind. Did mine this year after hearing about a few horror stories. i think i used a universal acelerator cable as its just a cable after all, could probably use a MTB brake or gear cable, anything is better than a stuck lid..

I have it on my 93 EU spec... So maybe only the US cars didn't have it.

Or only US dealers removed it after some issues.

Yep, I think anyone who is handy enough to make a loop to attach the cable to the handle end could use such cables. The Porsche one comes with a beautifully braized on ring at the end. For me it is well worth 7 quid, to not to have to mess about making up a cable to suit. Probably one of the cheapest new 964 parts I've had to buy.

Boxsey,

It is still listed on PET and the part number is included

Listed under wheels and brakes, sub group 5 (page 235 of the current on line PET v9.14)

There are also no years listed suggesting it ran for the whole model life

Good stuff, I'm still recovering from the ridiculous price of the Porsche seatbelt mounts!
