Default Fan/Alt Belt Tension

Replaced the belts on my '91 C4 manual last week. Added 1 shim for the fan pulley and it now has 4 shims between the pulley halves, which is all I have. I added 1 shim to the alt pulley which now has 3 between the pulleys and 1 left on the shaft in front of the pulley. Belts seem pretty tight, I can deflect them right at 5mm with fairly stout thumb pressure. Although the previous belts from the PO seemed about as tight, I was just wondering if I should add one or 2 more shims (I think 5 is the max). Don't want to wear the bearings if too tight. But I don't want to order my shims for no reason. BTW the "genuine Porsche" shims are outrageously priced even on the internet - $10 for the alt shims and $8 for the fan shims. Anyone aware of a less expensive alternative (other than Ace Hardware LOL)? Thanks

Default Sunset

Thanks, I've looked at Sunset's web page. Looks like online part ordering is coming soon, which surprised me since I've read a lot of posts where parts have been ordered from them (and the PO of my 964 ordered an ABS unit from them online a few years ago). For now do you just send them an email?

I always call. Recently I had to complement them on their customer service- they're always friendly, always willing to give you a price, willing to ship USPS for small stuff (way cheaper). It's actually a pleasure to do business with them.

Totally agree - ANY part that I must buy thru a dealer comes from Sunset!

get your part list together and shoot them an email.
They'll get back to you with a price and you call them once to give your address, credit card info etc.. Then it's all by email for me anyway.
