The West Is The Best...
A friendly tip for all of you folks going to RRIV from the northerly direction. If you're driving via 101 through Humboldt County, be sure to get off 101 at the Pepperwood exit, south of Eureka, and give the Avenue of the Giants a whirl. 30 plus miles of two lane through Redwood trees along the Eel River, then along the South Fork of the Eel River. There are muliple on/off points back to the freeway if you've had enough of the Redwoods.
If ever you've wondered why you have a sunroof, it's for looking up at the Redwood trees! This drive is especially glorious with the late afternoon sun filtering through the big trees.
Then, if you've got time, get off 101 at Leggett to take the Highway 1 to the coast. This stretch is the most perfect piece of pavement you'll find in Northern California and is very, very twisty...your passenger will need Dramamine. Not to be missed!
Then it's on down the Pacific Coast Highway to your heart's content! Again, multiple return routes back to the freeway if pressed for time.
It won't take long for you out-of-staters to realize why Jim Morrison sang, " The West Is The Best..."

Parked near a bright green 911 with an IN plate and an owner with a beer in hand.

If anyone needs a 3 day pass, let me know. I am unable to attend this year and have a pass I bought in March. It's $60, which will save you $20 at the gate. I'm in Los Angeles but can mail it out as well.

I had a gorgeous drive down from Humboldt to Monterey today. San Francisco Bay was nothing short of stunning today with epic October sunny weather. In the six hours of driving I didn't see a single p-car until 20 miles before Monterey but once I got into Monterey, there's Porsches everywhere...
Cheers to all those who are attending RRIV this year!

Day One down and holy crap what an awesome Porsche event! Before you even crest the last hill as you enter Laguna Seca you hear the cars...the noise! So great to see all these classes of Porsches running the circuit. I especially enjoyed the Gmund Cup group with 550s and 356s chasing each other. The Eiffel Trophy group was spectacular with 904s running with 914s and 911s up to 2.5 liters. The Carrera Trophy group was great as you get to see all the 911s over 2.5 liters running with RSRs and 935s. I was really impressed with how the older 911s could keep up with the newer ones... yeah, they're probably a few seconds off per lap but jeez, the ferocity of a whole pack of 911s as they came around turn 3 was something to behold.
And the Noise!!!
Tomorrow will have the qualifiers with the Gmund Cup Final starting at 1pm, the Eiffel Trophy Final at 1:30pm and the first race of 911 cup cars at 2pm. Sunday, the rest of the Finals starting at 11:15pm.
I've been taking pictures but won't be able to post them until I get home on Monday.
Very special event going on here at Laguna Seca!

I'm leaving for the track right now from LA! I'll be in the linen 1990 coupe. Maybe I'll see some of you guys there.
