I've been looking at H4 headlights to replace the stock units on my US-spec 964 and have seen one part number referenced from Bosch, 0-301-800-101 (chrome ring vs. alternate black ring ending in 103). Now in a number of places, especially ebay auctions, that part number is identified as not fitting past year 1986. What's the deal? Are they missing something here? Why the mis-information?
One headlight from 65-94 is pretty incredible, but so goes an iconic shape. Thanks to anybody who can confirm what's going on for me.

The factory switched to H5's in the late 80's. I suspect some suppliers are reflecting that in their descriptions. I have H4's on both of my 964's. They fit perfectly and are a noticeable improvement in lighting. In my case, in addition to the H4 assemblies, I added higher wattage bulbs, heavy gauge wiring and relays. Do not run higher than 55/60 bulbs without the relays. Otherwise you risk damaging your light switch.

Ahhh okay, so its merely a reflection of the factory fittment, not an indication of what will actually fit. Excellent and thank you!
Will be going ahead and doing the relays. Which wattage did you opt for in your low beam? Saw 55/100 and 80/100 I believe but would prefer to avoid bliding everybody all of the time

I have 80/100 on my cab and 90/100 on my coupe. If you aim the lenses correctly, you don't blind anyone. I've had the 80/100's in my cab for 15 years and have not had any problems.

There is one disappointment in this conversion (well, two): the sheet metal headlight buckets are greatly inferior to the far more robust stock items, and the mounting "ear" that you are reduced to using is the flimsy one at the bottom, and requires great care in installation - or, better, adding a clip-on captive nut and the snazzy double bolt setup that Pelican sells you (part #911-631-033-00-M260 and 911-631-132-00-M260).
The result is well worth the fuss & bother, for you can actually see at night, unlike the stock "bottle of fireflies" setup.
