Default Fan housing retention strap removal?

Hello all,

My fan bearing was shot so.... (you know where this is going already I expect.)

I've a powdercoating rig in my garage; going to do the fan and housing for sure. I'd *like* to do the housing retention straps too, as they look like crap, but I'm not sure how to get the retaining pins out (or even if it's possible).

Any help?

TIA!

be careful if doing the fan and housing. There isnt much clearance between the 2 and thick powder might cause a scrape until it wears down. I didnt do the straps since they flex and might crack when tightening them up if powered.

I think paint might be a better option on the straps...like Jim says, powder coating seems extremely likely to crack in that application. Also to avoid rubbing between the fan and housing, try sanding down the tips of your fan to give you a bit of extra room. The clearance in there is VERY tight and the rubbing sound very annoying (as you probably know if you had a bad fan bearing...)

I think you guys are seriously underestimating modern PC. Most of the current TGIC powders are rated to not crack when applied to sheet metal which is then doubled over (there's an actual spec, I think maybe they bend it over a rod of known diameter?)

Anyway, the discussion is only academic unless someone can tell me how to get them (the straps) out of the car.

Please?

PS: Regarding clearancing.... I think it took care of that on it's own

I used a short punch to knock out the strap pins.

Yes - I believe there should be enough room (it's been awhile since I removed/replaced the fan straps).

If the 964 fan shroud is similar to the 993, it'll block the pins from being pushed in toward the engine. I used a curved pick to coerce them out, just enough to grip the end w/ a pair of needle nose pliers & pull them out the rest of the way.

The pins are tapered in the middle, allowing the strap to help keep them in place. You'll need to manipulate the strap slightly to keep from holding up the pin.

Thanks for the pics Tosi. You are correct on the right side it can't be punched out but unfortunatetly the pin is flushed in and not sticking out so I can't use anything to try to force it out...hmmm any other ideas?

Used the curved one on the right, slipped just under the shroud:

Of course, its not that much more work to just remove the shroud 'while you're in there'
