Electrical Gremlins Strike!!
Everything working OK until yesterday. Went to put up electric hood - nothing
happened when I pressed switch. Checked hood fuse 13 - OK. Checked manual engine
ventilation flap - not working! Took it round the block all seemed OK until I
noticed that when I applied the brakes all the instruments on the panel dropped
to zero - foot off brake & they resumed normal reading except speedo which
flickered around 10 mph when I was doing about 40! Got home checked lights &
indicators all OK except no brake lights on applying brakes!
Help needed badly as I am supposed to be driving down to Plymouth on Saturday to
go to Spain on Sunday!!
I've put the hood up manually & fastened it but I can't risk driving without
brake lights. Any suggestions to crack this bizarre problem very welcome.

It almost sounds like a low voltage issue. I would start with the basics. How fresh is your battery? Have you checked the voltage with the engine off and on? Off it should be 12-12.5 v and running it should be 13.5 v. Also check the battery and ground connections, both at the battery and car body.

Make sure you check there is no spark leakage to earth on the top of the ignition coils in the engine bay.
Take off the plastic coil caps and run the engine. Remove coils and clean contacts if necessary.
I say this because on two 964's I have had a range of electrical gremlins, all traced back to high voltage jumping to earth on th coils.
Its worth checking in any case.
