Tiptronic needs rebuilt - need advice
I currently have my 93 964 Tip at the dealer's service department. Last fall I was driving pretty hard and the warning light came on. Ever since this happened I couldn't get drive to engage. This afternoon, I finally got it over to the dealer here in Northeastern Indiana and they are telling me that all the electronics are good, but the tranny needs physically repaired. They can pull it for me to send it off somewhere. Does anyone know of any reputable people that can do a rebuild on this unit, or a good source to find an used unit to purchase? Thanks in advance, as any help would be greatly appreciated!
Rebuilt tranny directly from Porsche is 13k.

Not sure if you have the option, but getting a second opinion would be a very good idea. Dealers typically don't have a clue about the older models and their preference seems to be to replace rather than diagnose and fix in my experience.
If it has to be done, DC Automotive tends to have a pretty good track record as a Porsche salvage parts joint. Could be a good place to start.
Good luck

Check with the breakers. I know that Parts Heaven has many used tips. In the Midwest I think that is Oklahoma Foreign? And there is always Vertex, they do rebuilt trannies if you send them the old one. Frankly I would not pay to have one rebuilt at shop rates. They are known to be fairly bulletproof, and the used ones are very good.
Mine has over 180K on it, and I track it a lot, so some spirited driving likely wouldn't have caused the issue.

The dealer said it was a clutch pack failure. I would like to get a second opinion, but with the labor I dumped into it to diagnose it, followed by here in Indiana I don't know of anywhere else to take it... I'm probably gonna have to take his word for it. I like the input about just getting a used unit and having it installed. I figured that even after I pay to have the unit taken out followed by shipping it to have it rebuilt, it might just negate the cost altogether and get a used unit. Have any of you guys heard anything about a company out of GA called Cog's Cogs? They have a used unit in stock for $2400. I'm not sure of the age or mileage that is on it, as I haven't gone for a full inquiry yet. I'm still poking around. Thanks so far for the replies!

I posted on this before, but no response.
In the link, there's someone who rebuilds them and give a warranty. In the States, if I remember correctly.

Prestige Salvage at Leeds in the UK had some low mileage tiptronic boxes in stock last time I called in. They ship worldwide I think.

some weeks ago, i´d to rebuild the automatic gearbox from my dads daily (Volkwagen) and i found some specialists for the job.
Finaly we paid 2k€ (~3k$) for the whole job including transporting the car approx 1ooo km on a trailer.

I'm still juggling options. I can't seem to muster up the courage to buy a pulled unit. I know these are supposed to be bulletproof, but after having this happen once already... I could just see it happening all over again with a pulled unit. Joe at Cog's Cogs has a wide selection available, I'm also enquiring with Euro-Motorsport up in Chicago. I will probably send off a couple messages to Farmer's and Euro Motoworks in Indy. Thanks again for everyone's suggestions!

Well after 9 months I have my baby back! I ended up going with a used transmission from LA Dismantlers for $1750 (that included tax and shipping) and then the installation at the dealership was $1446.06. Overall, not as bad as I was expecting. Hopefully I won't have a bad break with this one! Thanks for everyone's suggestions and input. Now back to fixing the little miscellanous crap that I have been putting off (spoiler sticking, low tone horn not working, OBC not functioning, etc).
