Default 964 won't turn over

Long story short, I left the country for five weeks and came back to my 89 964 C4 which will not start. I figured it just needed a jump start, but every few days, the car simply won't turn over. Strangely enough, the lights and instrument panel come on just fine and at times, I'll wait for five minutes and try again and the car will start without problem. I figured replacing the battery is a good place to start, but does anyone have any sneaking suspicions it might be something else?

It was the starter motor on its way out when that used to happen to mine.

Nope, stock Porsche alarm system. How difficult is it to replace the battery myself? It looked fairly straightforward but I'm not sure if I could be overlooking something.

also, there's a faint gas smell inside the cabin. maybe I'm paranoid, but it seems to be stronger than usual.

The battery is very simple to replace (just did mine), just make sure you purchase the correct one. Any reseller will be able to supply you with a 964 compatible battery.

be sure it has the connector to hook up the vent. You dont want battery gasses venting and building up in the trunk!
