Hey guys, thanks for all the replies, I'm sorry I've been preparing for my fight today. I was planning on trying to figure this out later tonight and tomorrow. Does anyone have a spare DME relay in the area that I could go pick up tomorrow? I'll probably end up just towing the car home and trying a new DME relay when I get back.

Thanks for everyone's help!

If you fight a 964, you'll only end up tired. And broke.

Rather than towing it home, why not take it to Desert European in Rancho Mirage?

Besides the DME relay as a possibility you may want to read up on the AFM wire harness technical service bulletin.

well here's an update. I bought two relays from Pelican, tried one and at first the car was driving fine, then I went to switch back to the old one just to check and surprise surprise... the car was also running fine! I drove it around for a while with the AC on and the problem seemed to start again, nowhere near as bad as it was out in palm springs. It would die at idle, but once I started it up and got it moving it seemed to run fine. I got it back to the garage and opened up the relay box and tried the other relay I had, I tried to let it idle and every stumble was accompanied by a clicking of the DME relay. None of the relays seemed to work any better than the other.

What possible problem could cause the relay to behave this way?

Default dme relay

perhaps its you ignition switch thats going bad, it send power to the relay. while its running in the garage try wiggling the key in the ignition and see if anything changes, you can just replace the back of the ignition if this turns out to be the culprit and not the whole piece with the key if you know what i mean.

+1 - Check your ignition switch. I would also check your grounds to ensure they are solid. When the relay chatters, can you check the battery voltage, is it steady or fluctuating?

Bad solder joint on the socket that the relay plugs into?

Would oxygen sensor or ISV really cause the DME relay to cycle?

i had a similar experience, and ended up getting towed about 70 miles from home. i think i posted it here but dont remember.

i had a spare relay, but that wasnt it.

dash warning lights flashing(christmas tree lights ?), engine hesitating and then badly bucking. then would just totally fail to start. it ended up being a bad coil.

2,000 miles previously a milder form had started to occur intermittently, which is why i had the spare relay. my car is very high mileage, 130K miles, but it's pulling good these days.
