Bumping this incredibly informative thread. Thanks to all of those who contributed, and especially Bill V, and Matt at Guard Transmission. I think I’m presently leaning toward the setup below that QuiquedB ran with, with an RS first gear. But QUiquedB ran with a regular stock 2nd gear and 2.059, while the RS ran with 1.895 for 2nd.
Any suggestions or advice are welcome. The transmission is already equipped with a GT LSD, and steel synchros from Porsche Motorsport is in the plan. The car weighs 2,600 lbs. with driver and a half tank of gas, 80% track/20% street. New England tracks with lots of elevation like Palmer and Club Motorsport. Kind of like roller-coasters for cars. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.
The current thinking for shorter gear ratios, and thanks to Bill V for this graph!
That`s mine an still happy with it.
Car is a light (1150kg) track car but going on it`s own to the tracks an back home. 3.6 with cams and headers.. so round about 300hp.
3rd, 4th and 5th gear are from albins. Limited slip is a modified 997 GT3 part...
this gearing is perfect for the Nordschleife, perhaps a little bit short for days with open Döttinger Höhe...

Thanks Koenig_Roland, that’s great feedback. You appear to be running largely the same gearing, but with a stock 3.5 first gear. First gear doesn’t count for much at the track, but do you have any thoughts on an RS first gear? Most don’t bother because it’s attached to the main shaft and the attendant cost, but my car’s main shaft is pitted and is up for replacement.

Thank you,
yes. My intention was first, to build something like an RS box. But the 1st and 2nd are just avail from porsche directly here in germany and both together would have been in the 6k€ ballpark. The albins gearset was roughly 900,- per gearset. My gearing features nealy the same RPM drop between 2nd and 3rd like the RS setup does, but with a generally lower gearing.. my drop from 3rd to 4th is also in the same region like the RS gearing.. Shift from 4 to 5 is much shorter in my case and give the car up to it`s topspeed a reasonalbe acceleration... Everything with the option of long distance street driving...
So - short conclution: if money does not matter: complete RS setup 1 - 4 with a slightly shorter 5th gear unless you have big horsepower from a turbo engine... with n/a engine and the usual 300`ish horsepower you do not need a theoretical top-speed of 275km/h.. not even in germany..
If money does matter: shorter 3 - 5.. but be aware of the sound of albins gears :-)

I have a RS America and my gears were modified for when I raced it. It’s now a streetcar and I never changed the gearing. I can definitely tell that it wasn’t set up for driving around town.
What is the difference between a g50/52 Carrera RS NGT(RoW) and a g50/10 Carrera RS(RoW)? Are they 2 different cars?

I have never driven an OEM Euro RS nor a G50.10 box by myself but some if my buddies did and some of them told me, they do not like the long 1st and 2nd gear of the RS box at all... perhaps that is what you mean with "wasn`t set up for driving around town"? My box is now ok`ish for germany autobahn. I participated last year at the 964-tribute event in sweden and had to drive 650km through germany to reach the ferry to sweden - gearing is not for flat-out fast street-driving, but for cruising with 130km/h up to 160km/h it is quite ok.. but the car is very loud without any insulation nor carpet and the albins gears... If avail and affordable, i would go with other gears that are not as loud as the albins gears are...

Sorry for the confusion… A RS America would fall under the category of a stock 964 OEM G50 transmission. It’s a U.S. car that had the same gearing as all US 964s. I had it modified to have better gearing when I raced it. I don’t race it anymore but I never returned the gearing back to its stock form, hence me saying it’s not ideal around town.
I was asking if there are more than one RS (Euro RS) gearing set. There were two charts in the thread that had different gearing but both said 964 RS.
This is my set up-1- 3.500
2- 1.895
3- 1.407
4- 1.174 (modified)
5- 1.000

The graph labeled g50/52 is not a g50/52, I probably started w/ the /52 and then entered whatever gearing the owner requested, also notice the race spec tires that also affects gearing
g50/52 is a 964 turbo trans
3.154 1.789 1.269 0.967 0.756
the only 964 RS trans is the /10, which has taller 1 & 2 compared to a /03 used in early 964
JMO but the 964 g50/03 is very nicely tailored for a stockish 964, I like a taller 1 & 2 bit that's personal and others may like shorter and be just as happy.
The main reasons to go shorter are either usage such as a specific track configuration or if the rev range of the engine is significantly enlarged
similarly a 6spd if you could get a /3x would be good but a stock /20 wouldn't be all that helpful.

Bill- Thanks for the clarification. The only thing on my current gear set is that when I shift into second from first, it completely flat. Obviously when the revs get higher it’s fine.
I believe first gear is stock (3.5) and second is modified (1.895) and third is stock (1.407).
It seems the consensus here is the RS gearing is ideal all around.

yes there is a huge drop when going to 2 and another fairly large one going to 3 from 2, that was why the /10 in the RS used a taller 1 & 2
The taller 1 & 2 shine when entering or leaving the pits

Thanks Bill, I’m guessing the taller 1 & 2 would also shine at AX? Particularly on tracks where you occasionally hit the rev limiter in 2 in the stock configuration.

it probably depends on the A/X course. any time you can cut down on shifting will be a plus.
my biggest issue with the stock 50/03 (that i still have in my convertible) is the step from 2 to 3... For some tracks with tight 2nd-gear corners, it is IMHO a to wide spread... With the lower 3rd (and 4th and 5th) gear in my situation i have now the additional advantage for the nordschleife that i do not need the 2nd gear anymore.. I can use it in adenauer forst and perhaps wehrseifen, but it is not necessary nor really usefull.. it is more "it the 2nd suits, i have been to slow in this lap"....
Gearing a 5speed 964 box is like choosing your dress for a first date.. there are so many options but you can just be sure about the result if you have tried it...
