For cleaning the engine I simply use Auto Glym engien cleaner / de-greaser and a cloth and brush. Once clean if you keep on top of it its not a problem. Mind you the engine was re-built 5K miles ago, so its not a dirty as some.

Ive heard that covering the essential components with plastic bags and then pressure washing is OK.

I live on a dirt road; clean is fleeting at best. However, the dirt helps hide all the rock chips (I have a wide-body)

But when I work on it, I clean everything I can reach...
