Default Lower rubber grommet for spark plug wires

I'm doing my first valve adjustment, and as part of that I'm replacing my spark plug wires. I bought some Bosch replacements with Behru ends that come without rubber grommets already attached, and am wondering how I can tranfer the existing ones to the new wires. This is for transiting through the engine tin to the lower bank of cylinders.

Has any one done this, and if so, how? I haven't pulled them out yet, but will shortly, and need to decide if I should continue on this path or send them back and order some from Vertex. The replacement wires seem of good quality, and were competitively priced.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Clay

If you are referring to the boot going thru the tin (3 spark plug wires for the lower set of plugs), you need to unscrew the wire from each plug end, both spark plug and distributor ends. then the wire can be pulled thru the grommet and the new one threaded thru. Finally screw the new wires back on the old terminals.

Hint: insert a small screwdriver between the wire and end terminal and use a little lubricant, such as ArmorAll so the wire can be unthreaded off the terminal. I also put a dab of dielectric grease on the wire ends before inserting them and screwing back in the terminal.

I believe those rubber grommets have a slit on 1 side that allows them to be opened up so the wires can be removed from 1 side of the grommet without removing the plug wire boots. If not, it wouldn't hurt to slit them with a sharp utility knife blade. The grommets have pretty deep groove that fits over the opening in the tins, and would easily stay in place.

P.S. I read that the attachment of the boots to the wires was a complicated process that required a special tool. Not true?

It was highly recommend on these posts to use pre-assembled wires and boots.

The disassembly and reassembly of the boots is time consuming, but relatively easy. Just run a small screwdriver, or other thin rod, between the old wire and boot to break the seal. It's suggested to put a little ArmorAll or similar lube between the wire and boot. Then it is just a matter of unscrewing the wire. I used a spot of dielectric grease when reinserting the wires.

As to the comment that the grommets have slits, mine don't. See my comments above.

Thanks for the tips. I removed the old wires from the car this weekend, after cutting the top spark plug ends off for the upper 4,5,6 cylinders (so no going back now), for speed. I was able to unscrew the cut wire ends from the Behru plug connectors, so will try removing the lower ends when I thread the new wires back in. I'll try to post some pics of the screw in section shortly. I have found the part number for the rubber grommet going through the tin, and depending on the cost of new ones, will likely choose to buy them as the old ones are pretty worn and grimy.

I've decided to make a go of the Bosch wires/Behru ends that I purchased and reuse the plastic collectors from the old set. They are over half the price of a Vertex-sourced "complete" set (with collectors and grommets), so it's hard to justify the added cost. Will add my opinion of how they work once I'm done.
