Default Please tell me this is not as bad as I think it is...

Alright.......

here's the issue. Went to change the oil today and ran into a (hopefully not tooooooooo bad) problem. Got the oil temp up over the second tick mark and went to release the torrent out of the reservoir tank - then the issue commenced.

As I was loosening the drain plug and awaiting the flood, another fluid started to come out prior to getting the plug all of the way out - WATER!!! Or at least what I thought was water (see pics below). I stared at it in horror for about 20 seconds as it dribbled out - and I realized that I should grab the camera in order to ask better questions. I would say that it dribbled out for about 30 seconds. Not a stream, but a little dribble. Then continued to pull out the plug and the green (brad penn) flood commenced. No water out of the case, just green oil

Is this a very bad issue?? I know that it can't be good, but were could that amount of water get in? Is my thermostat going bad?

Short history - 5500 miles since last oil change (I know - I have been lazy) One hard track day last weekend and about 5 autocrosses. Drove the car in a down-pour about a month ago - and a few light rain showers since.

I have taken a sample and sent it to Titan oil analysis - also didn't want it sitting there without oil - now has a fill of Valvoline VR1 20W-50.

Note - all of the junk in the oil pan is grass and other debris from the pan siting on the floor of the garage. Just took pics of the white film and the water dropplets.

thanks in advance.

Don't worry it is perfectly normal.Condensation water in the system gets burned off when you run the car at normal temperature a little longer.I still remember my shock when water came out during my first oil change

I shot this one off a little early - did a little searching on here and found that it is a normal thing. 911jetta had 3 inches on a 1L bottle - so I feel a little better!

Should be OK. I stupidly forgot to cover the end of the breather hose when I pressure washed the underside and engine compartment when I had the engine out time before last. I had already set the plug and I filled with oil when the engine went back in, so I didn't know about the water that got into the tank until I drained the oil after break-in, about 1000 mi.

There was about 10 oz. of water in there, and I didn't notice any damage thereafter, even next time I had the engine apart.

I've seen it before as well, at least it pools in the low spot of the tank plug, might not even get circulated there.

Its an indication that you are not driving far enough , fast enough , often enough .
Did you know that your car came from the factory with a water release lever ?

Indycam -

Awesome!!! More reasons to drive it!!! Can this legitimize more track days?!?!?!?!

Where is this water release lever - never heard of it?

Hawk 911 -

Not going to lie - that did cross my mind for a split second - and I was thinking about who I was going to have to kill - or who hated me that much....

Don't panic. :-) I think it's lucky that the H20 just falls to the bottom of the tank. :-)

The oil pickup is above the bottom of the oil tank, where the water settles, so it should not be a problem.
This happens over the winter, through condensation, and not getting the oil hot enough during driving. This is one reason that I change my oil in the spring, after the cold weather is gone.

The water release lever works great. I have driven and maintained a 911 since 1977, and have yet to see water in the changed oil.

Stop being a ***** and go drive the snot out of it. I feel so sorry for your poor neglected and abused 964. You should be ashamed.
I am in NC for a few days, I would be happy to take care of this issue for you.
