Default DIY Wheel Refurb

OK, not perfect by any means but then neither is the rest of the car! They're a helluva lot better than they were though...

Polishing the centre caps and then carefully painting in the colours of the Porsche crest helps distract your eye from the less-than-perfect alloys too.

The money saved on getting a professional job will buy some great food and wine in Capetown next week!

Awesome work! If your car isn't concours, saving loads of money on refurbishing the wheels yourself is a great idea. Care to share your secrets/method?

I'd say that's a pretty good job!

No secrets really - just rubbing down alloy spokes with sander, then fine steel wool, clean off thoroughly with white spirit making sure there's no steel wool shreds left, then multiple coats of Hammerite Smooth thinned down a lot so that it doesn't show brush marks.

The rims are polished, so rub down with fine steel wool again to remove old lacquer, then polish with T-Cut or similar. Really tedious job trying to clean and polish round 44 bolts on each rim!

Making sure paint is thoroughly dry and hard, mask up tyre then spray overall with aerosol lacquer.

How long they'll last remains to be seen!

Sorry, should have said - do the polished rims first, then the paintwork or else you mess up the paint doing the polishing.

Did you paint the center caps yourself or just swap the old one's out for a painted set? If so how long did those take and did you use the paint "pens" or model paint and a fine brush?

Yes, just used a fine brush and model paint. They didn't take long but you need to let each colour dry before you do the next. If you mess up, no problem, just wipe off with white spirit and start again! Quite satisfying to do, really.
