Question What is this?

I have a 964 C4 93-mod. On each side of the dashboard by the A-pillar I have someting that looks like smal speakers (se pictures). I have always thought this was speakers for a aftermarket hansfree system since there also is a microphone by the A-pillar.

When I follow the wireing from both the speakers and the microphone they leeds to a black box under the pasenger front seat (se picture, Porsche part number 000 043 203 18). From what I have learnd this box is a control unit for the central lokking system of the car. The box may also have something too do with the original alarm system.

The wireing up by the dashboard looks too be aftermarket, but down by the black box everything seems as professional and original as it can be.

Anyone seen this before? Is it speakers for a handsfree system or does it have something too do with the alarm?

I guess is that 000 043 203 18 Tequipment part is the control unit for the alarm and what has been installed are aftermarket motion sensors.

There's a three lettered agency listening to your conversations while you're driving the 964

I would feel nervous in this car with all those devices peeking out of the corners. ;-)

Did they damage any trim (screw holes, etc.) when they installed all this stuff? I would not want it in my car and would remove it if the trim was not damaged.

+1. Copy, that.

A bit like Huey, Douie, & Louie in that old film, Silent Running.

Nope, nothing is damaged except for the two triangular plastic covers at each side of the lower dashboard (kicking plate). They had to be modifyed to let the wireing go under the dashboard and further down to the black box. Luckily no holes are drilled and the trim is not damaged. I am going to remove the "mysterious" things and new plastic covers are ordered, but I would really like to know for sure why they were but there in the first place.

No mystery, they are ultrasonic sensors for the alarm system. Were these a UK thing only? My 964 had them screwed to the dash; dealer fitment of Porsche Alarm System 1. Very 80's/90's and seen in all sorts of cars over here. Removed my when I had the car re-trimmed and still have them in my spares box.

Mystery solved, thanks a lot! They can't have been a UK thing only. My car was delivered in Germany, and I am the second owner. So my car had them installed in Germany.

Yes, those ultrasonic sensors were a 'must have' feature of Thatcham approval at one time. The only route to sensible insurance for some years! Spiders were the enemy with respect to false alarms.
