500+ hp through a C4 drivetrain and the only thing that has ever had a problem (once) is a clutch plate.

The C2, however, will surely kill you come the first corner and spins like a top in high humidity let alone rain.

Good luck ;-)

Well, there ya go - more "Excellence" This will surely factor into their Valuation Charts.

Scan through the AWD-related topics here. These systems are damn near bulletproof.

As long as the car has been well cared for by a Porsche enthusiast and has the records to back it up, you should consider it. Have it checked out by a independent Porsche specialist who has experience with the air cooled 911s. Ask the guys here to recommend one in your area.

I have owned both and prefer the feel of the C2. Drive both and see if you like one more than the other. FWIW I had no AWD problems during my short C4 ownership.

Yep, but if there are minimal problems, who cares?

Lonnie: Love your humor and common sense. I completely agree with your comment that C2/C4 preferences are mostly a matter of personal opinion, much like coupes versus Targa's (which are better ).

Some say it's the best AWD system ever fitted to a 911, and I have heard far more better than bad things about it. If you are just getting something to drive around there is nothing wrong with getting a C4. They say only the best drivers will even notice the slight difference around a track, and nothing will compare to a C4 in the rain or snow. The C2 is not even close. I have a C4 with 136k with any problems, nor as far as I can tell there never has been any problems with it.

I would go with what other have said. Disreguard the C2-C4 badge, unless you have a very specific reason to get one or the other, and buy the best overall car you can afford.

And you can always tune out the mild oversteering C4, then the only thing you are out is about 300lbs. I have seen more than one 964 C4 with modest mods hang with an RSA.

Would all of the C4 owners please chime in with their expensive repairs for the AWD system?

I have had 1 bad relay, cost to repair/replace $65 USD

Expensive C4 repair bill - I had to replace the front diff seals. I think they were $12 - EACH!!! (there's two ).
And then the twenty minutes of my own labour to do it (it was actually ALOT easier than expected).
There was the clutch i had to replace, no wait, C2's have those as well...

Similar setup, same tires, about 1 sec/min of lap time difference. In other words, I was ~2:05 (Thunderhill, full), 1:46 (Laguna), 1:55 (Sears) with the RSA I just sold, compared to 2:08/1:48/1:58 with the old '92 C4. It's basically the weight that matters.

I agree with the posters who stated that your choise should be based on you ride preference. However I understand it's probably hard to get the opertunity to drive a C4, and a C2 back to back. FWIW I like the ride in the C2 better so that's what we chose. Condition is more important then 4 or 2 wd.

They could be minimal but expensive!
Best luck to the OP in finding the right one.

Right out of the Box the C4 was shunted by Porschephiles as straying from the orig. design. They backed up their arguements with the greater complexity, which really hasn't been borne out with time. It's like saying an 8-shot pistol is more dangerous than a 6-shot pistol.

This has not stood the test of time! Many magazines have re-reviewed the C4 and in several, they said it was the best, most reliable of the 911s ever produced, and they have 20 yrs. data to back them up.

If you want the fastest car and the best ride, you're not going to look at 20 yr. old cars anyway. These have been exclipsed by better technology long ago.

Drive both and decide. Condition and service history is most important. Rather have a well sorted C4 than a ratty C2 anyday!

Cheers!
