Is this 964 worth a PPI?

Is this 964 worth a PPI?
I recently located a 1990 white 964 C2 coupe 5spd with 101K miles for $17.9K The dealer tells me the car is a creampuff with a 3" binder full of service records. It is a 3 owner car (all doctors) and looks pretty good from what I can tell in the pics. The car is 1400 miles from me so I would have to do a PPI. Is this a 911 that's worth paying $200 for a PPI. A 964 with 100K miles on it for $17.9K doesn't sound like the deal of the century. Should I look around some more? I just can't find a lot of 5spd coupes out there.

nope that is about what they are going for, and there are not a lot of coupes around. On top that, I have been watching 964 prices slowly creap up.
The short answer is yes get a PPI done on it.

Trusting a dealer's word is iffy at best. Pay the money to have an honest assessment of the vehicle. The PPI is not a guarantee that there's nothing wrong, hell, the Porsche dealership missed some big things with my rig.
As for those records, have them scan and email them to you, or at least the major service receipts. Keep the information about the PPI secret from the dealership, you paid for it and it's your information. This information, good or bad, and for sake of negotiation, it will be all "bad" when you talk to the dealer, you will use this "bad" PPI to leverage the price in your favor.
$17.9 means $17 even and if it sits for more than 30 days you push it down lower.
Have him take a lot pictures, they will be very telling of the condition.
Good luck!

Typical dealer description of a car. The only thing missing is "never seen rain".
Why don't you have a fellow Rennlister check it out before you spend money on a PPI? I hate buying from dealers as you don't know the person that has previously cared for the car. BTW - $200k will likely not cover a compression and leak down test. With respect to finding a reputable shop, look at the website for the local Porsche Chapter where the car is currently located and find ads for independent shops. You can then have those shops vetted here on the board. Good luck!

I'd hold out for a 92 or 93 (even with higher mileage)....or at least a 91.
There were various improvements by that point. However, I do believe most of those could be retrofitted to a 1990.
IMHO - there are plenty of cars out there and if you are willing to travel 1400 miles, that means you'd be willing to travel another 500+ (so your options are obviously quite vast).
Also, I would do a PPI even if the car was 14 miles from my house on any car, regardless of mileage. It's good insurance - especially in terms of compression test.

The difference between a 1990 and 1992 isn't worth passing over a good car. You get what, nicer looking mirrors? Different rims?

do yourself a favor with any car you get and pay the extra dollars for the PPI. Even if they say sure get one and seem confident that it will pass..did I say even..I meant especially. Maybe the dealer doesnt know if there is a problem as they wont be driving the car on a regular basis anyhow.
Secondly, I would try to get some term warranty even if its only 30 days. At minimum an engine and drivetrain warranty. If the dealer doesnt want to do that then youre kinda on youre own when you leave the lot, but im sure you know that already as I did.
If you look at the broken headstuds postings that I and some others have been doing you will see the experience for my comment.

Yes get a PPI on the 1990 C2, $200 is cheap insurance against buying a money pit.

FYI I purchased the car in my avatar a little over 6 months ago for 17.5k. Almost mint condition with 46k miles on it. It's a 1990 and has very minor leaking at the oil return pipe. Don't limit yourself to a 92-93. I was doing the same and then realized I can buy aero mirrors at anytime.

a 21 year old car without a factory warranty? $200 is the best 'investment' you can make.
I will bet you the PPI finds more than $200 worth of issues. Plus it nice to be able to knock the dealer down to size, with his 'cream puff'. In addition, it will save you all sorts of flak on this board when you try to attend to all the little issues. Like a house, no car is perfect. Even if this car was perfect, it wouldn't be for sale at a used car dealer.
Wow! sweet deal

I would definitely spring for the PPI, for all the reasons listed above. What kind of dealer is it - Porsche dealer, new car dealer or corner-lot type? I bought mine from a Porsche dealer 2000 miles away, but I didn't necessarily trust them any more than anybody else. Their shop wanted something ridiculous, like $800, to do a PPI on their own car. I wasn't on Rennlist at the time, didn't know shops in that area, so they faxed me all the service records they had (the PO had it serviced there for 10 years), it looked good, so I went on my "gut" - which I don't like to do, considering I had looked at 3 cars previously that ended up failing PPI's. But this time, I just gulped hard and went for it. It turned out to be even better than described, but I wouldn't recommend it. Since I've been on the forums, I've seen too many guys get burned - by big dealers, little dealers, anonymous private sellers and yes, even Rennlisters. People are people wherever you go, there are stand-up guys and there are lousy friggin' liars. Get the PPI. And the "Rennfax" idea of having someone here look at it first is an outstanding way to go, if someone is in the area.
Holy cow! Nicely done.
