car ran great, then began to choke on fuel cut off ? ran rough for awhile and now cant hold idle.

fine time to find out i'm still a valid AA member : )

i'm guessing fuel filter(new oct 2010) cheap, or what else could it be, pump ?

DME relay ?
A clogged fuel filter will flow enough gas for idle but will choke at higher speed .

doesnt mean the spare is not bad itself, not very new just newer. the 1st DME's pins were very blue.

There you go , your battery has gone bad or the charging of the battery has gone bad .
Try and charge up the old battery , if it charges up then check the charging system in the car .

ok, so not a fuel problem, probably a spark/electrical problem. car is parked and i'm home, it was. 70 mile tow, was going on a 150 mile trip. now sitting in my kitchen, thanks for AAA, and thanks for the responses guys.

Do you have access to a volt meter? Check your battery's voltage with the engine off and also running. You should have 12v off and 13.5v while idling.

Did you have the Christmas tree of lights on your dash? Check the coils. Do a search on Christmas Tree and will find several posts. Had simlar problem with sputtering and then stalling. Very inconsistent problem. Eventualy traced to electrical gremlins and coils.

had a similar prob with mine turned out to be a bad o2 sensor - kept blowing the fuse which coincidently is the same fuse for the fuel pump, thus no fuel.
you did check the fuses, right?
