So my neighbor is interested in buying a 911 and asked me about the 996 and I told him I would do some research for him.
So any advice? Like any car what years to avoid etc? i know there was certain issues with teh early 996 models. Was the fix from Porsche successful or just a cover up and better having the work done at a reputable shop?
Love to hear opinions and advice. "
I told them if they asked it in the 964 forum they would get opinions and helpful advice not just jerk responses.
So did i do something wrong and be honest wouldn't you help someone who posted this question?
someone asked about a 964 vs 996 comparison about 4 to 6 weeks ago so there is 3 to 4 pages of responses if you search back a bit.
my summary opinion ...
996 - better for comfortable daily driving but no track due to serious engine risks
964 - more potential to appreciate but more of a hobby (as 20yrs old and small items need attention).
i read the post......looks like you received a couple of very decent responses in the end, but most were kind of ******** replies including the moderator....actually a very wildcard insult there as well, which i am surprised the moderator did not pull.
there are it seems several forums that seem to "react quickly" to the drumbeat of 1 or 2 of the forum regulars (993 forum i would also rank there).
when i was buying the 964 (now gone) i asked same question on 964 UK forum & received very fine responses indeed. last yr i was looking at early 90's bmw m5 & asked of that at bimmerforums....1st class response, all professional and detailed time of ownership & what one could expect to face.
of the forums i dial into (911, 964, regional-canada, regional asia/pacific) seems generally more decent.

+1 - You did nothing wrong. Its been my experience that most on Rennlist are kind helpful people. As with all groups, you can run across the occasional jerk. Don't give up hope.
Thank you I thought I would see responses like this because i do see that question to us all teh time and we all answer it and don't insult people for a decent questions.

My oh my...
I think there are at least 996 folks who have wee bit of a chip on their shoulders... maybe a "996 complex"?
That, coupled with the fact that yes, you probably could have done a search, perhaps led them to think that you were throwing some bait for them. I suppose there have been more than a few posts on their forum like, "Why are 996's so cheap?", so they're a little defensive.
I didn't see anything overtly offensive. Flaming on Rennlist is pretty tame.
A couple guys tried to give decent, informational answers.
I didn't read anything that was new or different, or would change my mind about 996's.
Why can't people just answer simple questions? Seems like they are trying to defend their cars when talking about the issues can actually give you a better understanding of your machine, thus allowing you to be able to fix or prevent the issue, thus giving you a better overall vehicle and p-car experience.
No if you don't mind, I will go drive some twisty curvies and be grateful that I can hear the roar of my 3.6 air cooled, and immerse myself in the slight tinge of burnt oil while I am mesmerized by the road zipping by between my two signature (or at least used to be) Porsche headlight wings.......thank you very much.
And to add insult to injury, thank you all for the help that you have given me over the past two years!!!
I spend time on a BMW 5 Series and a Range Rover board. By far, this board has been the most friendly and helpful. You rarely see "use the search feature" comments on this board where on other boards it seems to be the only answer to questions.
I was not even so offended by the search engine but that the 964 doesn't have a lot of models or variations like the 996.
I started a list add to it

1990-1994 c4

turbo 3.6
