mine was also pretty striped. I put the tool in as far as I could and then taped it with a ball peen hammer and it recut the grooves enough to get a bite good enough to hold. Its a tight fit getting the hammer in the space. Once i got the alternator out I lined it up the best I could and continued tapping it in. Dont pound to hard or you might screwup the alt bearings. The shaft is soft so worth a try. Has worked fine ever since.

i think i am going to give this a try. i just dont want to have to take it into the shop for this simple issue. all i want to be able to do is replace the regulator to see if that fixes the charging issue.....of course nothing is as simple as it should be.
