Default Motor oil viscosity for Long Island, NY

My recently acquired 91 Coupe spent its whole life in Memphis. The car has been reliably maintained with Shell Rotella 15W-40 Dino oil. I did my first oil change in the summer and used this oil too (easy to find at Advanced Auto Parts)

I want to drive the car when the temps here drop in the coming months and I was wondering if this viscosity is OK for Long Island winters?

thanks

It doesn't get too cold in Long Island, does it? I say you'll be fine, no need to worry.

Better switch over to Brad Penn 20W50 when the summer comes, though. Anyone disagreeing with me is wrong - and their engine is on borrowed time!

I'd idle the engine for 5 minutes before driving off in temps below 20 F. to allow the oil to reach critical areas and thin a little before using mid-range engine speeds. Definitely do not use upper engine RPM until the oil is up towards 180 F.

I would reccomend changing to a lighter weight oil. I live in NY and use a 10W-40 for winter. As far as what brand is a personal preference and has been beaten to death on this board. The W after the 10 stands for Winter.

FWIW I have been using Castrol Sythetic 5w-40 year round (I am also on LI)............It is one of the "Porsche approved" oils, still caries the SL designation, etc...
