I may cut them up some day just to see for sure, but not before they go bad - lets hope this thread is still around by then...
A good hydro mount should not make any noise no matter what you do to them. However if you tap on them they will have a weird resonance to them.

When they make noise you know its bad. The 964 mount were probably lighter because they didn't have any oil left in them.

Just to triple check, I called my good buddy Tony Callas over at Callas Rennsport just to confirm that all the 993 mounts (and the later & early ones too) are hydro pneumatic. He confirmed that he believes that they are all hydro mounts (even though they certainly don't look like it). One caveat though - he said he thought that the RS mounts were perhaps solid, but we're not talking about those here.

I'm sticking by my assertion that all the factory, OEM or Genuine Porsche production mounts from the 964 through the current models (996/986, etc.) are all hydro pneumatic. All the information I have indicates so.

thx,

Wayne

I believe that. Even the 944/951/968 were hydrolic.

I'm pretty certain only 993 Turbo mounts are hydro but regular 993's are not.

The Boxster transmission mounts are the same as the 993 engine mounts. They have a 993 part number actually printed on the top of the mount. In the Boxster manual (sorry, I don't have the 993 manual handy), it says that they are hydraulic. In my mind, there really is no doubt.

Interesting, undoing it destroys the mount.

No name mounts are in and they may be ugly and cheaply made but they are an upgrade to the worn out ones I replaced (the original mounts look like engineering masterpieces compared to the Ebay ones).

I recommend that anyone who swaps mounts from an older vehicle also replace the M8 bolts that screw the mount down into the frame of the car. I managed to snap both bolts on the drivers side mount which necessitated a fast trip to Sears for new bolts and a broken bolt remover kit.

The car certainly handles better than before and there is only a subtle amount of added vibration and interior noise. The car also shifts more precisely. If I get a few years out of these mounts I will consider it a good investment. I WILL buy OEM's next time.

Thanks for all the help and information

That's odd, it's common practice when a few extra inches of clearance are needed for maintenance, and also when dropping the engine. I have not even thought about replacing mine after either of these procedures.

You wouldn't safely be able to do it with the cheap mounts. I accidentally backed out the entire shaft from the mount when I unscrewed the 19mm nut to do my broken top bolts repair. The car was jacked and safe but if it wasn't it would've been a bad scene.
