Default which way does the starter ring gear go?

Just got the parts for the LWF conversion - and I cannot figure out with PET and repair manuals which way the ring gear attaches to the flywheel.

One side of the ring gear is solid, the other is recessed. So, depending on how I bolt it on, the ring gear is effectively a little farther, or closer, to the engine.

Doing some measurements with the starter pinion, for a full engagement, I think I need the ring gear to be farther from the engine. But looking at some of the pics on the forum - seems the opposite (closer).

Oh and one other thing - is it supposed to be extremely difficult to slide on to the FW? I feel like I'm going to need to "press" it on. Wondering if I got the wrong flywheel now...

The FW part number is 964.102.239.31

Do you have the old flywheel with the ring gear on it ?
Can you lay the new and the old side by side to check where the ring gear should sit ?

The ring gear gets heated up in the stove
while the flywheel get put in the fridge .
When one is good and frozen the other gets good and hot .
Then they are "slipped" together .

I do not have the old flywheel ( sold it a long time ago) but I should have been searching more than just the 964 forum:
https://rennlist.com/forums/993-1995...d-install.html

I did not heat and cool - I just tapped around with a plastic hammer and wasn't so difficult after all. Wish I would have known this trick before, though. Thanks a lot for the reply!!!

Now if I can just remember how to get the snap ring off for the throwout bearing I'll be set! Well, that and I have to get another clutch alignment tool...

For clutch alignment I find a socket wrench handle does the trick .
Stick the round end in , rotate the free end around to center the disk , snug up the bolts .

Ive had very good luck eyeballing clutch alignment - if you've got the motor outnof the car, it's pretty easy. Beats paying for the tool (and waiting for it to arrive, while you could be moving on with the car!

On a lark - I stopped by Kragen's auto parts and they had the alignment tool for $4. No brainer.

I ran into another snag, though, the old pressure plate to flywheel bolts seem too short now. That was probably in the parts list and I just ignored it.
