ie the invention of the torsion bar also his design.
Yeah, I was struck by that, too, in this tank's description.
It seems to have been a go-to feature for him: if it needed springing - he torsion barred it!
(The old man probably threw torsion bars on the kid's strollers.)
Seems the old man knew a good idea when he copied..., err, saw it:
(You'll get a load of this if you go to Jay Leno's Garage web site's video on his Tatra.)
The Czechoslovakian Tatra cars designed by Professor Hans Ledwinka in the mid-1930s used all round independent torsion bar suspension, along with air cooled rear engines. Also in the 1930s, prototypes of the first Volkswagen Beetle incorporated torsion bars—especially its transverse mounting style. Ledwinka's concept had been copied by Ferdinand Porsche, whose successors later had to acknowledge the influence of Ledwinka's sophisticated Tatra models on the Porsche-designed Kdf-Wagen of 1938
Apparently someone Tatra in Eastern Europe former USSR built a car that looked exactly like a Beetle prototype or very similar to several years before the Dr. Porsche's Bug came out.
There was a couple other Eastern designs that were strikingly similar to Porsches Bug prototypes. Although I guess back then they were still all seperate states.
I am trying to did up all that research again. It was all rather interesting.
