Hi all,
I'm starting to go around in circles on the topic of a performance chip for a naked 1990 tipo C2 964 now in New Zealand but ex Japan. So here's where i'm at.
Lots of good feedback about Steve Wong at 911chips on the performance improve of just about all the 964's that have taken the plunge. His site talks about some interesting aspects like his chip does not cause the check engine lamp to stay on. One thing of concern is that some of the sites mention US chips for US tuned models and the different fuel types.
The UK sites talk about the same fuel types as here in New Zealand and point out a difference in US tuned cars versus Rest Of The World. They dont however mention the little things like engine lamps etc but do warn against using US
So my question. have any UK, Aus or even NZ based owners used either the 911chip from the US or a UK based chip. I appreciate the 911chip site has a meriod of reviews, all positive and some from the UK but I just want some independent (i hope) feedback.
Thanks
Glen

I will give it a try. First of all please read THIS
As you can see Europe and Australia and probably NZ use a different scale to messure octane ratings, so it is important that you compare apples to apples.
It is my understanding that all Porsche 964 around the world are "tuned" to run (RON+MON)/2) = 91 octane fuel, so that said, all you have to do is figure out how that compares to the fuel that is available in NZ. Then phone Steve Wong, great guy to talk to, a fountain of information, and explain what you need for your engine configuration, and you are off to the races.
PS. I have one of his chips in my 964, and can highly recommend them.

I run an Accellracing chip from UK. Available on eBay. Works a treat, very cost effective and Steve really knows his stuff. With dyno details on A/F ratios etc for your engine, he'll even custom make one to suit.
I run my car on 95 octane minimum and usually run shell or BP 98 octane

imo in any street car no reason to run this much protection (against pre ignition) as these cars just do not generate that much stress/heat. my last car was 04 cobra running plus 17psi boost on supercharger & measured at 575rwHP on dyno did very well indeed at 94 pump gas....at WOT
i would think for any naturally aspirated 964 anything over 92 octane makes little sense.
i use a wong chip....very happy as my car seems to start up quicker & settle down to 800 rpm idle quicker. throttle response definitely better....but these are all personal views

Thanks for that octane rating article which was very informative. After reading it sounds like what country your from is a determing factor in selecting a preprogramed off the shelf chip, US as opposed to Europe etc.

wow....98 octane not available globally (unless you use octane enhancer)!

I can't comment on octane ratings in NZ, however, I have had three different chips in my 964: AccellRacing, Roock, and now 911Chips (Steve Wong). The Roock and Accell chips were very similar in feel. The 911chips chip is definitely the best. It seems to have an extra shove in the back at high revs compared to other chips. I wish I had more 'scientific' info to give but sometime subjective info is best...
By the way, I am in the UK and always use 98 fuel, either Shell Ultimate or BP Optimax.
Hope that helps...

Well first up I'm going with the G-pipe bypass. The mixed feedback goes from small increase to no increase in horsepower as you will only get any real advantage from different headers........BUT........and its a great BUT.....they sound so much better. Thats a winner in my book.....
Once I've confirmed by eprom isn't soldered I'll be going with the Steve Wong chip option. After reading all he posts including lorenfb in the post link below I thinking f**k it....why not (pardon my french). Life's to short not to have some fun. I will keep you posted with progress.
Cheers

I've got a Steve Wong in my 1990 C4 Cab and it is a significant improvement in general performance. I'm pretty happy with it.
As an aside - is your a car a white C4 Cab ? I have a friend who used to own one in NZ.
