I think that feature is going away, the USB option is much better and can work with any computer, not just ones that have the slot or adapter. They hold more, too. You can even get the Porsche USB key like I did to store music for my car on!
Very true, but I am not aware of solutions as simple and unobtrusive as the SD card slot with the USB connector. You and up with a cable hanging in your glovebox, or worse, with an USB key or cable protruding from your radio face plate.
I do see your point about having it completely inserted. I have mine in the glovebox, which I don't mind, as I can also hook up my ipod to it and I want it out of sight. I also have the option of filling cds with music files as well, you can put over 10 hours of tunes on just one. I thought the SD cards were a great idea when they came out, I didn't buy into it, but now that I have an ipod and many other options, I don't miss it. I wander if someone makes a stereo that would take a DVD with recorded music files? That would hold more than most people would ever need on just one disk. Some of the newer units have huge hard drives that you could load everything onto and then wouldn't need to insert or plug in anything, unless you wanted to add to it. That seems ideal and probably the future since some auto manufacturers are adding this feature.
I use a thumb drive in I believe is a kenwood deck. So unlimited storage for minimal costs. It only sticks out about an inch and honestly noone notices. Actually not true had one person see it and ask what it was. He thought it was great. You can make your own folders etc and scroll thru it on the face very easily. I love it.
Mine is connected through a cable on the back of the stereo into the glove box, wish I would have done it sooner! Took out the old aftermarket stereo and changer that was mounted in the trunk and sold them.

i went with alpine headset, and the same, i-pod dock in the glove box. (installation is married to boston speakers/tweeters in front, pioneers in back, same sizes as stock, & trunk mounted 4X100 amp).
I was looking ad the SD slot as well and ended up going with the Hamburg MP68. It is a bit obtrusive but I like it and the USB cable is hidden but I can get to it if I want. I just leave my USB stick in the car all the time. If need to add anything I just grab it from behind the dash.
I pulled the amp from under the passenger seat took out all the old cell phone transceiver gear and mounted a Boston Acoustic Amp.
You will need to rerun wires for a the Amp or for the Speakers.
There is a grommet hole in the fire wall on the fuse box side that you can run a power line from the battery to the amp if you go that rout. -D²
