I was using BP in my race car which has been rebuilt in the fairly recent past but I found it seemed to be finding its way out from spots that I had no problems with before. I went back to Valvoline VR-1 and it has worked out quite well. The last track weekend it didn't use anything.

I'm hanging out here cause I'm looking for a 964 as my next street Porsche and am on the learning curve.

I have a garage we can work in. I live right off the 101 in Mountain View. What kind of oil should I buy ahead of time? Any other tools/materials/filters?

A few people told me I don't have to change the oil until I reach 7,500 miles. Another said 15,000 miles. Then some people said I shouldn't use mineral oils, while the mechanic who inspected my car told me to stray from synthetics. The lowest price quote I could get was $280. I know exotics are expensive, but does this seem reasonable?

Can someone give me a definite (or at least widely agreed upon) opinion on what kind of oil I should use and when I should use it?
Be wary of people who tell you the high mileage (5000+km camp) this is a common thought now pepertuated by the responsibilities put onto the car manufacturers to reduce emissions. Oil and changeable fluids are classified as emissions by the government so less oil changes noted in the owners manual mean less emissions tied to the manufacturers products and responsibilities.
I'm not saying that there hasn't been major developments in engine technology, but if we look at this notion in chronological order it doesn't make much sense that we can go from a manufacturers suggestion of 5000km to 15,000km, 20,000km or more, in the few short years that we've seen this trend.

Hmmm - I have a similar condition - just had a bunch of leaks fixed but changed to BP and now I drop more than before. Which oil were you using of the BP?

I'm not least bit mechanical. But, did my own and felt like million afterward.
Big plus one on Brad Penn.

I'm ashamed to admit I haven't had time. I just started a new job this month and I'm there pretty much from morning until night and on the weekends I sleep and drink and have zero energy to do anything at all. I might just have to sneak out and take it to a local dealer one of these days soon, especially now that I'm having other problems

So, has anyone ever tried using an extractor to partially change their oil? I have a nice 8 Qt.extractor/filler (+/- pressure) made by MityVac which I used to swap tranny fluid in several cars (in filler mode). The unit comes with a 'dipstick' tube which you insert and then pull the oil w/ vac pressure.

It seems to me that if I could extract 7-8 Qts., it would make the job less cumbersome and messy than trying to drain the oil tank directly into a pan.

Any thoughts, pearls or prior experience out there?

Cheers!
