delet sunroof 964
I am planning to delete the sunroof in my 964, and wondering what is the possible weight saving.
Some people have told me as much as 18 kilos, and others as little as 5 kilos.
I am not planning to replace the roof by fiber or cf..
Can anybody help me?
Thanks
Sergi

A competent welder can use the panel and weld it in. It takes knowledge to avoid warping the roof to hell, but is doable.
Then you need a new roofliner with the holding rods, and that requires removing all the windows. Good time to remove the hooks and inside lights for the ligtweight theme.
It is not diffcult, just time consuming.
One can not overstate the imprtance of a good welding specialist.

How much is this modification? It is cheaper to look for a RSA, but the time you do the welding, repainting, and interior work?
I have a non-sunroof RSA and love it. It makes a huge difference in headroom (compared to C2s I have been in).

Welding the sunroof panel in place is labor intensive because of the big gap that has to be welded across. Distortion is an issue with the additional heat input required. Someone is making a slightly bigger panel for replacement. Do a search and the company name should come up.
The other technique is to replace all or part of the roof with a doner roof with no sunroof aperature, but this is pricey.
To get the maximum weight savings all of the sunroof tray must be removed from the roof under structure. I've heard the weight reduction to be 30-40 lb (13.5-18 kilo). Some have reported cracking of the roof in cars that are tracked and do not have a roll cage.

Havent done this on my porsche, but have just done it on my other car (bmw coupe).
And its a lot more work than it looks.
I welded the oe panel back into the roof, this left a 5mm gap which had to b bridged, then this left the panel a little low at the edges, ect, ect.
Is it worth doin?
Dunno, not if a road car, yes if for race/track.
