Default New 964 owner about brake pads

Hi,

I am a new 964 owner from another side of the world .
It is a 1991 production 964.
Anyone can assist to identify what model of brake pads should I order for my front calipers?
I know the calipers at front were upgraded by previous owner, however, I did not know which brake pads I should select at online store.
Moreover, any difference on Textar OEM pads and Pagid OEM pads on daily street stop and go use?
Ref: http://www.type911shop.co.uk/shop/ca...aram=cid%3D%26

Thanks a lot.

Are there any visible part numbers on the calipers? If you post them, it will help narrow it down. Hard to tell just from the photos.

I have bought the Pagid pads in your Type911 link. They are, IMHO, excellent and as good, if not better, than textar for slightly less pounds. However DO NOT buy the pads in your link for the fronts as you have 993 or even big red (not sure which) calipers and the pads will be too small.

I'd suggest, you get a part number off the calipers first, otherwise it's just a guessing game. The calipers look like they could be painted 993 calipers but they could also be 993TT calipers. If you don't plan on tracking the car, I'd recommend the OEM pads. I track my RSA on street pads now but will likely switch to Pagids again in the future. I have previously experimented around with Hawks and Pagid yellows and ended up with OEM again after a "big red" upgrade.

If you pull a pad, you can measure it and compare it to the diagrams found on many websites.

Here is one site with a dimensional representation of a 993 pad:

Really thanks for the above feed back. Seems it pay safe to locate the part no. of the calipers to confirm what calipers they are before order the pads.
Do I need to remove the caliper to read the part no.? Did the no. printed on exposed location?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks. Did big red means 965 turbo's 3.3/3.6 caliper?

Big red is the generic name for the calipers on the 964 turbo 3.6 and 993TT. The 3.3 had the slightly smaller S4 calipers. You'll find a very useful 911 brake guide here:

Steve,
Thanks for your brake guide table.
BTW, is it possible to read the part no. on the calipers without remove them from car?

When I recently removed my calipers (standard 964 ones) there were no part numbers on so you probably won't gain anything by taking them off.

Might be best to check invoices you got with the car to see if you can find some part numbers for the pads. Alternatively pull a pad as mentioned above and see if you can find a part number on the backing plate. If they're Pagid the generic codes for the pad sizes are:

Turbo 3.6/993 turbo (big reds): E1842
993/964RS: E1204

Both of these pads are the same width (132 mm) but the turbo pad is 75 mm high while the 993 pad is 71 mm high.

For completion, you should find that the rear pads are Pagid pattern E1203

p.s. the brake guide table was put together by another Rennlist member (Bill Verburg I think?).

Steve,

Thanks for your help. I will pull a pad out for measurement.

Power Up. Those appear to be 993 front calipers and rotors. The hole pattern on the rotors matches a standard 993 front rotor.

If the pad looks like the shape below, then that is what you have. The image is of the Hawk HB141.650 shape which fits the S4 caliper found on the 928S4, 993, 951S, 968 with M030 caliper. Hope this helps.

Mark,

Thanks for your confirmed answer. I pull a pad out today for measurement, it is the exact shape and dimension that your diagram shown. Great help.

Really thanks for all input.

FWIW. If you are after a great pad for road but also an excellent fast road/track pad, Project Mu have a pad caled a HCplus http://www.project-mu.com.au/en/products/pad_hcplus.php that is better than a road pad, but unlike most high performance pads, it starts at 0deg so No issues with cold stops. On the track, it is better than the Pagid Blacks I used to run as the Project Mu tops out at a higher temp and seems even better at resisting fade with extreme heat. They also have excellent feel and don't squeel. Sounds too good to be true I know, but after running them, they are brilliant. For the record, I have no interest in their business, just very impressed with the pads....
