What service would you give a car with spotty service history?

A car that is 20 yo will have every single part on overtime already. You can spend a fortune to making the car more "newer" hence more reliable.
Good luck with the new car. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I agree with you with the exception of parts that might leave me dead on the side of the road. I bought this car at a nice low price knowing full well that I would be spending some money replacing a lot of parts (really, maintenance items) just to ensure some degree of reliability (and of course, safety). I intend to drive this thing.

Verify and secure, or replace and secure updated Rear Blower Resistor:

I've compiled a spreadsheet of the maintenance items and intervals. Maintenance Schedule It's mostly from the Shop Manuals and Streather's book with a few miscellaneous additions from other sources.

Thank you all again! This is a bit of torture waiting to get the car.
Oracle, you're right. The key for me is to balance replacing priority and time. I'm not expecting this to be a cheap Porsche, but over time I think it can be very enjoyable to own and live while while making it "right".
..if that makes any sense.

Hey Doug...I've done most of the "easy" stuff on the list since getting mine last year. Let me know if you wanna try getting together to knock some of those things out. Cool?

Thanks Travis! Part of my goal of having a pro wrench do my first service is he'll put his expert eyes all over the car. Once I get that vote of confidence from him, I'll be more comfortable tackling some stuff on my own. For sure I'll be on this board a lot, so we can probably catch up later.

Sounds good. FWIW, Euro Classics and The Garaj appear to we pretty well thought of locally (although I'm only personally familiar with Euro Classics). It sounds like you might already have your own "guy" though. Oh...I noticed someone local was selling some 964 stuff on craigslist the other day too (CF ducktail and such).

I would look at what was done at the last services before running off and replacing lots of stuff. Plugs, wires and caps along wth a valve adjustment may have been done fairly recently and are long life and fairly expensive items if you are paying for their replacement.I would also wear out the brakes and then replace pads /rotors and flush fluid then. Same goes for an oil change ,do the trans and front diff at that time. With 155000 mi you will need other things over time (clutch?) and I would want to spread out the pain.

Without a doubt I agree. Part of the problem is I'm not 100% sure what has been done in the past few services. At this point I have an outline of services, but not a lot of detail. Once I have a chance to review in more detail I'll put out a more definitive service checklist..

Congrats Doug!
I've been looking at 964s too and a wrench here in FL said the A/C evaporators are a common problem on 964s, so replacing that may help your A/C blow cooler unless you've already worked that out?

Good tip, thanks Cap'n!
Still going to be another week before I get my car. P.O.'s mechanic is short staffed so the promised starter and alternator replacement is taking longer than expected!

Doug, sorry to hear they are holding you up from enjoying your new ride. You've waited this long what's another week, right? You could always go over to the shop to try to talk some sense into them
