Default Opinions please

I've been lurking for awhile and have made the occasional post. Today, I subscribed for membership. I have enjoyed way more than $17.95 of information and advice for free, so I decided to pony up and would encourage others to do the same.

A coworker of mine is selling his 94 C2. He's owned it for 5 years and is the 4th owner. It has not been babied, but not abused. The current owner has done minimum maintenance as required, but nothing preventative.

It suffered hail damage last summer and was resprayed. The respray looks good from a distance, but a trained close up eye reveals it needs redone to bring a premium price.

The car is stock plus 17" cup replicas. It has 80,000 miles on the odometer. No reason to believe it has been altered.

TPWS did the PPI yesterday. Compression is good, no leaks, clutch is fine. With the exception of the fore mentioned paint quality, need for tires and due for a major service ... it appears to be a solid driver.

I plan to use it as a daily driver and the occasional business trip of 300 - 400 miles.

So here is my question: Value? Is this a $10k, $15k, $20k ... car?

Durango I bought my 91' C2 for 14K USD last November. I had planned on paying a bit less but when I drove her I knew I wanted it and thus paid the dealership the asking price. I had researched the 964 through CarFax not knowing of any other means at the time. I will be the 4th owner, it has 145K miles, the Tiptronic Transmission and all the power amenities work. There are of course minor dings and wear inside but nothing that can't be taken care of with a little care.
I guess my question is what is the car worth to you. This is my second 911 so I understood what I was getting into with maintenance (i do my own, and not just the needed but also preventive, restorative), are you going to drive it everyday, is it a weekender, or going to become a track car? these are questions to ask yourself then figure budget and how much is left over to fix (ahm, do preventive maintenance ). Well that is what went through my mind and it took a month to finally make the commitment to go and test drive the 964 ( I knew once I did it would be hard not to drive off the lot with it). I have truely fell in love with the feel and drive of my 964.
My first Porsche was a 77' 911s Targa. I learned how to work on 911's then. She looked great but had been beat up pretty bad inside the engine and Trany. -D²

This is a tough one to nail, because of the hail/repaint thing. I would think it would be a $17K-$19K car without that issue. I guess it kinda comes down to how much that matters to you. Sounds like it's pretty good mechanically and it has never been wrecked, so as a driver it would work pretty well.
Was the PPI done for you, or someone else? I'm wondering if you already made him an offer? How badly does he need to sell? I think I would float something like $14K out there and see how well it's received.

It will be my daily driver and occasional road tripper (business). Hope to do a couple track days a year.

The PPI was done for me and I spoke with the mechanic. Really, the only concern I have now is the paint work and possibly requiring a respray. The hail isn't a big deal to me, just the expense of a respray (or the cost concession at resale). I wanted to get an opinion on the value considering the respray, a service and tires.

I made an offer prior to the PPI of $15,000. Based upon the PPI, I made a low ball of $12,500 and then raised it to $14,000. He wants $15,000 and I could have it tomorrow for that number or he's going to try to clean it up and sell it.

That sounds like a fair price but consider that you will need to budget for valve adjustment/major service, suspension and brakes soon. Like within next 10K miles no?

I agree with Addict, she looks good from the pictures but as always the real test for me is behind the wheel and the purr of the engine. -D²

As others have said make sure you factor in any upcoming needs the car will have. Clutch replacement will cost $3000 plus at a shop. Suspension upgrade with alignment is north of $2000 at a shop. A 15000 mile maintenance will cost $1500 at a shop. Other possible needs at that mileage are plug wires, steering pump. Does the a/c work? Oil leaks? My point is buying a 964 for $15k may seem like a deal, but if you dump another $5k into for misc items (trust me this is very easy to do)you are now into it for $20k and it still has the hail damage and suspect paint, but its still probably worth $15k.

I think if the paint is sufficiently bad that you are worried about needing to respray again, I would walk.

A good respray is no small task - I would take a 964 with a few leaks or some other mechanical stuff that needed sorting out over one that needed new paint, personally.

i agree to some extent - quite a few well sorted out cars around with nice paint and well maintained by guys that care ....may have to wait & pay a little extra - but in the end buying best available mechanically/interior/exterior may be best in the near-mid term.

I opted not to buy the car. I knew the outstanding paint issue would always bother me until I resprayed it and I didn't want to incur the cost.

I bought an '02 996 Turbo yesterday instead. I love the 964 and have wanted one for 20 years, maybe someday.
